5 Powerful Questions Teachers Can Ask Students

5 Powerful Questions Teachers Can Ask Students | (e)Books and (e)Resources for Learning & Teaching | Scoop.it
To inspire more inquiry in the classroom, blogger Rebecca Alber offers up five questions to routinely ask students.
Daniel Tan's insight:

I like this guide.

However, but what should happen more is students asking questions. I see the situation, that due to easy access of content by students for content (on the WWW) from their fingertips (on their devices), they will know MORE than the teacher.

a. While their Google search will give them this morning's updates, the teacher will have content prepared 3, 6, 12 months ago.

b. while the teacher is confined in his/her teaching to a curriculum syllabus, in a search, students are not. Imagine a Grade 5 student asking  the teacher a question on content on the Internet written for high school?

The Beginner's Guide To Learning Analytics - Edudemic

The Beginner's Guide To Learning Analytics - Edudemic | (e)Books and (e)Resources for Learning & Teaching | Scoop.it
We haven’t talked about learning analytics in awhile (at least not specifically), but that doesn’t mean learning analytics have missed the mark (last year, learning analytics were tagged as a ‘top trend’ in education). We talk quite often about blended learning and personalized learning, often times neglecting to consider that learning analytics are what really …
Daniel Tan's insight:

Good start on the LA concept - however, i always felt that the real benefits of LA is not in the hands when used by management, teachers/educators, but when used by the students.

LA will increase work loads and responsibilities of the teachers (may not always be desirable. or even practical), or arguably even impactful. On the other hand, if LA can lead to student self awareness of their learning, in the context of their community of learning, then it can becoming a useful and sustainable self-directing, self-motivating  and self-esteem building platform.

PersonalizED :: A Guide to Personalizing Learning in the Classroom

PersonalizED :: A Guide to Personalizing Learning in the Classroom | (e)Books and (e)Resources for Learning & Teaching | Scoop.it

Personalized learning is an instructional philosophy intended to address the distinct learning needs, interests, aspirations, and cultural
backgrounds of individual students to create an environment and experience that best facilitates their learning.

The aim of this paper is to provide educators teaching students of any
grade level, content area, ability level, or school format, with an immediate access point, resource guide, and evidence necessary to initiate the transition to personalizing their classroom environments and
experiences.

Daniel Tan's insight:

Teach means ‘to show how.’ You can teach someone, or someone can teach you.

Learn means ‘to find out about something.’ A person must learn things for himself.

Someone else may teach him, but he must do the learning for himself

Digital media help desk – digitise, create, manage and use still images, sound and video – free for UK higher education, further education and skills.
Daniel Tan's insight:

With the Gen Y students replacing the students who were baby boomer and Gen X, content delivery has remain "unevolved". Most instances are an extension of what was - from chalk board to white board to projection screen (on Powerpoint). This is magnification, not transformation - and the reason for not expecting the revolution that was hoped for.

JISC suggests an info kit that would present a good (new?) starting point. In case you think you already know, the key perspective here is that their starting point is NOT on teaching (instructivist), but learning (constructivist/connectivist).

Choose your video wisely when designing an eLearning course. Check the What type of video should I put in my eLearning article to find more.
Daniel Tan's insight:

Hmmm - interesting - the students are the ones using and creating more videos than the teachers, instructors, trainers and faculty.

Is it a perspective issue? Teachers use more textbooks, as they do so more than students. In fact, often, this is one of the few strong-holds we have left.

Time to re-invent?

Daniel Tan's insight:

Education is making slow progress. Like banking, it is conservative and valueless. I thinking, like eBanking, it will cross a tipping point where the learner will be empowered to interact with well learner designed content. The shift will be so uneventful that the learner will be empowered to make choices as to who, what and when s/he wants to know, learn or discover.

The conservative eBanking industry cannot put a finger of the tipping point moment when customers will visiting banks less, yet were transacting far more. Customers were choosing banks based on ATM proximity and convenience (I know I did!).
