Most social media sites consequently use the nofollow attribute, and this would mean that the traditional approach to ranking pages is not an initiator. Of course, there are those who believe that Google is selective in the sense of treating nofollow links.

 

One should keep in mind that the signal is not always the same as the ranking factor. Google said: “We are using it as a signal in ranking of organic news and results. Also, we use it for improving news on the basis of how many people shared an article.” 

 

Other types of signals are:

 

 - Discovery

 - The concept of trust (sites and users)

 - Temporal (speed)

 - Context (semantics)

 - Behavioral

In our website we estimate that more than half of visits from Twitter are shown as direct traffic. As you can see from the image, when we had a peak in Twitter then direct traffic grew more than referrals and we saw only 8 percent of visitors coming from Twitter. To find out more about this read Thomas Baekdal’s Don’t Trust Your Social Referral Data.

However there’s a way to register those visits as non-direct if you add special Google Analytics tags to the original link. Below is the link tagging tool that lets you tag all the links you put into social channels. This ensures that you know where visitors are coming from.

Business-to-business social media marketing has always been a harder nut to crack than its business to consumer counterpart. A new study suggests that a refusal to embrace new social channels might be one reason why.


While more B2B marketers are using social media sites than ever before, Facebook (83 percent), Twitter (80 percent) and LinkedIn (80 percent) are far and away the platforms of choice for the majority of brands, with YouTube (61 percent) and Google+ (39 percent) rounding out the top five.

Pinterest is used by just one in four B2B marketers (26 percent), and Instagram less than one in ten (7 percent).

You want to identify and foster an audience that will follow, like, share, retweet, etc.

 

If the people who make buying decisions do not congregate together online, you need to find an audience that does, one you can engage. This is often the case in B2B.

 

If your social media program does not create search engine ranking authority, you need a separate social media for SEO campaign.
