Do you feel like you must be on all social media sites? They can eat up a lot of your time if you are on every one. I've joined most of them in the past three years, and have seen many of them change. A few don't drive the traffic they once did to my websites or blogs. Why spend time on them if they are not productive?

The most successful businesses thrive because they understand their customers at a deep level.  The most successful Facebook pages are no different.  So let’s look at a question that isn’t asked often enough: Why do Facebook users like Pages

The two infographics from Lab42 and ExactTarget show the motivations that users attributed their ‘likes’ to, in order from highest to lowest:

40% to receive discounts and promotions39% to show my support of the company to others36% to get a “freebie”34% to stay informed about the activities of the company33% to get updates on future products30% to get updates on upcoming sales29% for fun or entertainment25% to get access to exclusive content22% someone recommended it to me21% to learn more about the company13% for education about company topics13% to interact

87% of Facebook users like brand pages.  In 2010, only 38% did so.  Facebook thrives because they understand thir users.  Great brand pages know their specific visitiors.  My Key takeaway was that only 35% of Facbook fans feel that the brand listens to them. There was also an interesting discussion prompt about if a 'like' equals an opt-in for marketing messages.

The 10 "Best" Social Media Campaigns? Marty Says Maybe [eye candy]

The 10 "Best" Social Media Campaigns? Marty Says Maybe [eye candy] | DV8 Digital Marketing Tips and Insight | Scoop.it
Since social media has become an integral part of our lives, marketers have used their creative talents to develop social media campaigns with various degrees of success which can be measured in a variety of ways.

Via Martin (Marty) Smith

Martin (Marty) Smith's curator insight, January 11, 2013 8:12 AM

Best Social Media or TV Ads
The problem with this list is it elevates the visual aspects of social media. I think the most converting social media is some customer service innovation by Zappos or someone similar that we will never know about.

The elevation of the visual, while cool and fun, reinforces the wrong side of social media. Yes SMM has a fun side, but it is very serious business and that is where the money is being made.

Treating social media like a one sided visual "campaign" reinforces dangerous stereotypes that have CFOs and CEOs doubtful about the real ROI of social media marketing.

As much as eye candy is fun and sells blog views the real benefits of social media are boring old LINE management benefits. I realize "Boring Old Line Management Benefits" isn't a headline that gets many views, but let's be careful about what we hype as "best" least we reinforce stereotypes we are working hard to throw off.

I don't have to hide or trick my employer. It's not just the fact that I'm a freelancer. I wouldn't waste my own time either. It's just that social networking is part of my work. It's work but it's also fun, in fact it's one of the more pleasant parts of my daily routine. Lately I have to dig through link profiles of penalized sites to identify unnatural links. Boy, that's a tedious task, I do social networking to relax afterwards. My most demanding task is content creation or rather blogging though.

If all you're measuring on Facebook is Likes, you may be missing a significant indicator that the site has recently increased the importance of: negative feedback. From the article:

There are four types of negative feedback on Facebook ranging from undesirable, to worst for a marketer, starting with:

● Hide: hides a single specific post from the user’s newsfeed
● Hide All: hides all the posts by that page from the user’s newsfeed. This used to be known as “unsubscribing.”
● Unlike Page: “unfan” the page
● Report spam: user thinks your page is spam

Spiders still need context Brian so you note to the designer was correct. Correct alt text has been a particular challenge for me with many designers. I prefer to have file names with keywords too, but good luck selling that idea to a designer (lol). M
