Are you partying ... I mean marketing ... like it's 1999? Unfortunately, many of the marketing tactics that were considered best practices 15 years ago are actually indications of crappy marketing today. And while we generally use our blog to give marketers advice and provide helpful tips, how-to's, and information about the latest trends so they can do marketing that doesn't suck, sometimes it's also helpful to understand what "bad" means so you know exactly what to avoid -- and create marketing people love instead!

So if you're curious about what you should be doing to totally suck at marketing, the following slideshow will show you the way. Just don't say we never told you so ...

This is not actually surprising. CEOs have little time for much of anything that doesn't directly involve the management of their companies. However, you should make sure you are briefing your CEO on significant development in social media, whether it be what the competition is doing, or what your customers are saying, or business trends you are spotting.

Robin, thank you once again for pointing out the broken link.

There's only ONE broken link of which I am aware. The creation of eBook has been a four month long process and during the course of it one of the links has gone dark. The Color Association of the United States is a perfectly valid, and captivating example of picture curation, as noted in my previous comment. Lastly, the FedEx site is a perfectly valid example of curation that has served its purpose (criticizing the bailout), and is hence no longer updated -- but is still an interesting example of curation as a marketing tool.

There's nothing "curious" going on here. One of the sites has gone dark, as you pointed out. We have since updated the eBook to denote that the site is no longer active. Thanks for sharing the link -- hope you and your readership enjoy it.

Thank you Pawan for your kind clarifications that allow me to better appreciate this good editorial work you have done.

I think this type of publication is right on the mark in serving the needs of your audience and my criticism was only directed at highlighting how important, for anyone involved in this field, me included, to pay great attention to details as the reader often does not have the time to appreciate what is not immediately evident.

Please keep up such great work as it helps the whole industry grow while educating customers with great examples.

Is Your Business Ready For Social Search?

Is Your Business Ready For Social Search? | DV8 Digital Marketing Tips and Insight | Scoop.it

2012 saw a big shift in many search engines towards a more social search.

With Google’s search engine integrating more social information from Google+ and other social networks, and Facebook’s plans to introduce new social search features, 2013 should lead to an even more social SEO strategy.

Social search uses the social network activity from the person performing the search to deliver more personalized and relevant search results.

Martin (Marty) Smith's curator insight, January 14, 2013 9:50 AM

Social Search changes a lot of things you may not realize such as:

* The rhythm and schedule of your content creation.
* How, where and why you share content.
* Who you follow, curate in and reference.

* How you treat "evergreen" content.

* How you gather User Generated Content (UGC).

These last two bullets aren't covered extensively in the linked article. Evergreen content, the content you've had up forever and that defines your business vertical, needs to "pop" on social nets or it begins to decay in value.

This need for "constant updates" increases the importance of UGC. The ability to review or add to your content gives your website the best content it can't "buy" and UGC helps content update more frequently, increase shares and generally make YOUR content OUR content and that is what you want.

If you don't have a comments or review block on your content add it. It isn't enough to just include a "comments" block, you must respond when people share content (always with appreciation since only 1% of your traffic is willing to share) and reward those willing to give you some of their time in order to create content on your website. .

What About Trolls?
People worry about negative UGC, sometimes called trolls. Yes you will get some people saying nasty things. Never defend against such an attack. To defend is to lose, instead be appreciative of the content and empathetic to any legitimate issue. If someone says you are stupid they reduce the legitimacy of their content. Don't thank them for calling you an idiot, but let them know you will look into whatever issue caused the attack.

Consider such an offer an open loop. Never leave loops open for long. Make sure you post a more definitive response in 24 to 48 hours. Here is where published guidelines are very important. If someone just calls you an idiot with no substance your guidelines should say that such a non-specific attack is considered inappropriate and you have the right to remove.

Personally, I don't ever like to remove anything. If some attacks in a non-specific I am a jerk way. I respond by not being a jerk and provide my personal email or cell where they can discuss their feelings with me personally (they almost never do).

The tricky part to an online attack is to NOT personalize and recognize that attacks are part of the poker you are playing. Stay in the game and go all in if you need to and you turn an attack to a benefit.  Remember:

* Empathy isn't agreement.

* LISTEN more than you talk.
* Never defend or be defensive (it is a loser's game).

* Trolls will isolate themselves by their behavior.

Three Factors To Select What News Stories To Curate: Current, Interesting, Applicable

Three Factors To Select What News Stories To Curate: Current, Interesting, Applicable | DV8 Digital Marketing Tips and Insight | Scoop.it

Via Robin Good
more...
Robin Good's curator insight, January 12, 2013 4:17 AM

To choose which news story to curate and pass on to your readers, is not always something easy to do.

My personal suggestion is to look only for the most interesting and relevant stories for your audience while leaving out anything that is mildly interesting. I'd always go for quality over quantity and I would not discard little-read stories or dated ones, because of these two factors. Rather I'd select them on the basis of their immediate usefulness to my reader and not on the one of their freshness or recency.

Serena Matter, of the Canadian Public Relations Society, has just published a short article suggesting three key criteria to employ in selecting what news to curate each day. She writes:

"Finding content to share online can be a challenge, especially when your goal is to provide information of interest to your followers.

In many instances, it is easier to re-tweet something that appears in your newsfeed, even if it’s not that relevant to your industry, than to come up with new material.

However, this wastes a valuable opportunity to engage your online stakeholders. Rather than taking the easy way out, there are a few simple guidelines you can follow to ensure any content you share offers value. When creating or searching for material to share, keep this acronym in mind: C.I.A. (Current, Interesting, Applicable)."

But beware: "current" is a misleading variable, as "something" can be "current" depending on the specific context in which it is presented and it is not an absolute trait of a news story.

A story from two years ago can be made immediately current and relevant simply by relating and connecting it to other information which is directly impacting our present.

Good for beginners. 6/10
