▶ Arnold Veeman - Composer, Songwriter, Singer, Musician in Pieterburen, Groningen

check www.arnoldveeman.com for more information! Mien Lutje Laif door Arnold Veeman. Translated from English to dutch dialect to Mien Lutje Laif by Jan Siebo...
Judith van Praag's insight:

Taking me back home, to the wide horizons of the northern low lands, this video about Arnold Veeman introduces local differences in language and culture within a country as small, or as large as greater Los Angeles.

In Stern a novel by Bruce Jay Friedman I recognized my family's plight, moving north from Amsterdam in 1963, in that of the novel's protagonist a Jewish man who moved his family from the great apple upstate in 1962.

"Oe komt hier nie weg," the neighbors said to my parents.

"We don't want to," my mom and dad said, not realizing that what they understood as "you can't leave from here," really meant "you aren't from here."

In hindsight the beginning of what would be a time of mutual misunderstanding.

Old and Useless? | Piet Koek

Old and Useless? | Piet Koek | Dutch Stuff | Scoop.it
Judith van Praag's insight:

Music Therapist Piet Koek writes about a 106-year-old lady who delighted in his presence. He writes about her instant recall of songs of yore, and how she didn't miss a beat, although she wouldn't say much otherwise. He writes about the trust she put in him, and how he learned to trust his own gifts thanks to her. This story brought me to tears.

This story brought back memories of my mother's last years on earth, and how she derived pleasure from music, singing and songs, and from the presence of young people, everyone but her peers were young, and perhaps in her mind her own age, for the sense of time and time gone by was lost on her.

Trust is like the baton we pass on in a marathon, we carry on, run with it to the best of our capacity and pass on what we've acquired.

If the  reward of patience is patience. The reward of trust is trust.

The World and Hair Color of Marlene Dumas

The World and Hair Color of Marlene Dumas | Dutch Stuff | Scoop.it
Zin om kennis te maken met Marlene Dumas? Of ken je haar werk al maar wil je nog veel meer weten? In...
Judith van Praag's insight:

The question on the site is: What does Marlene Dumas do to/with you? This gives me the chance to relate what happened to me a couple of years ago.
I was presenting an architectural tour of the Seattle Central Public Library to important donors or sponsors of the Hammer Museum. Among them Leonard Nimoy and his wife Susan Bay, as well as Dana Delaney (China Beach).
Ms. Bay asked me if I knew Marlene Dumas.

Truth is, I did. In the 1980s we had a friend in common and we both spent time in his large studio in Amsterdam.

So, I said, yes. I do.

Then Ms Bay said, you're silver to Marlene's gold.

That was it.

Don't get it yet?

Marlene has blond, and I silver curls.

Part I: A Fort Worth poet is well-versed in love | The Leo Vroman & Tineke Vroman Effect

On a fateful autumn evening in 1938, Leo Vroman and Tineke Sanders were seated one person apart at a student club dinner in Utrecht, a city in the Netherlands. The two had never met.
Judith van Praag's insight:

We started communicating around 2004 and saw Leo and Tineke in person three times. They never knew Fort Worth was not really on our way from Seattle to Galveston or Visa Versa. We visited so they could meet our pooch Mocha, and because they were among the dearest people we've ever known.

After Absence of Centuries, Monks Hope to Find New Home in Schiermonnikoog

After Absence of Centuries, Monks Hope to Find New Home in Schiermonnikoog | Dutch Stuff | Scoop.it
Human.nl - Durf te denken!
Judith van Praag's insight:

An Internet search fueled by my doubts concerning the existence of a nunnery on the isle of Schiermonnikoog, in a (supposedly) historical novel about the Netherlands, lead me to a video about present day Cisterciënzer monks.

Their number has dwindled so much (... and then there were only twelve) that they've decided to leave an impressive monastery in the province Overijsel in favor for a smaller home.

Since their order had a presence on the isle of Schiermonnikoog in Medieval times, they want to move back.

Back to what I wonder.

If only the nunnery the author made up was real.

Making Theater With Feet in the Mud

Making Theater With Feet in the Mud | Dutch Stuff | Scoop.it
Judith van Praag's insight:

The first time I heard about Arnold Veeman, my feet were sinking in the slib of Puget Sound and my eyes were on star fish that clung to the bottom of rocks and anchored driftwood.

A friend who hails from the area up north in the Netherlands where I spent part of my childhood and teens, makes her home on Bainbridge Island across the bay from Seattle and invited me for a mud walk.

She told me about this dark skinned performer, songwriter, musician, composer who sings in the dialect of one of the northern provinces.

Here he is with contra bass. If you can't read the Dutch text, check out another scoop of a song you'll enjoy, whether you understand the Dutch dialect or not.

Voiceless uvular fricative

Voiceless uvular fricative | Dutch Stuff | Scoop.it
The voiceless uvular fricative is a type of consonantal sound, used in some spoken languages. The symbol in the International Phonetic Alphabet that represents this sound is [χ], and the equivalent X-SAMPA symbol is . The sound is represented by x̣ (x with underdot) in Americanist phonetic notation. It is not to be confused with the voiceless velar fricative (IPA [x], X-SAMPA ).
Judith van Praag's insight:

Voiceless uvular fricative could cause throat ache in the uninitiated. After speaking just English for a long time, speaking my native language makes me reach for suckers.

The Philosophy of Water - Vrij Nederland

The Philosophy of Water - Vrij Nederland | Dutch Stuff | Scoop.it
Iets gewoners dan water bestaat niet. Maar water verandert in iets heel bijzonders wanneer het door de ogen van een filosoof wordt gezien. Zoals door de ogen van René ten Bos.
Judith van Praag's insight:

Sorry folks, this is a book about water, in Dutch. Keeping in consideration that the Nether Lands, the low lands are under water, protected by merely dikes, sea walls and dunes, you understand water, the relationship with water, the philosophy of water is of the utmost importance, and something every Dutchman and woman is consciously or not obsessed by. Water, the great equalizer. Amen.
