Part I: A Fort Worth poet is well-versed in love | The Leo Vroman & Tineke Vroman Effect

On a fateful autumn evening in 1938, Leo Vroman and Tineke Sanders were seated one person apart at a student club dinner in Utrecht, a city in the Netherlands. The two had never met.
Judith van Praag's insight:

We started communicating around 2004 and saw Leo and Tineke in person three times. They never knew Fort Worth was not really on our way from Seattle to Galveston or Visa Versa. We visited so they could meet our pooch Mocha, and because they were among the dearest people we've ever known.

How culpable were Dutch Jews in the slave trade? | Dutch Stuff | Scoop.it
Months before the publication of his book on the Jewish role in Holland’s slave trade, Orthodox Rabbi Lody van de Kamp issued a scathing critique of the Dutch tradition of dressing as Black Pete during the Christmas season.

It's April 1, 2014. I'll respond to this in November, December.

After Absence of Centuries, Monks Hope to Find New Home in Schiermonnikoog

After Absence of Centuries, Monks Hope to Find New Home in Schiermonnikoog | Dutch Stuff | Scoop.it
Human.nl - Durf te denken!
Judith van Praag's insight:

An Internet search fueled by my doubts concerning the existence of a nunnery on the isle of Schiermonnikoog, in a (supposedly) historical novel about the Netherlands, lead me to a video about present day Cisterciënzer monks.

Their number has dwindled so much (... and then there were only twelve) that they've decided to leave an impressive monastery in the province Overijsel in favor for a smaller home.

Since their order had a presence on the isle of Schiermonnikoog in Medieval times, they want to move back.

Back to what I wonder.

If only the nunnery the author made up was real.

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN - Princess Beatrix Greatest supporter of Art and Artists in the Netherlands

bijlage Centraal Museum
Judith van Praag's insight:

Calls this a serendipity. In 2013 Queen Beatrix abdicated in favor of her son Willem Alexander. The Netherland finally have a king again. Yesterday Princess Beatrix was treated to a wonderful birthday celebration in the Ahoy Hall in Rotterdam. She was hailed as the protectrice of the Arts. "You gave us a feeling of security," artist Jeroen Henneman said. He praised the former queen for having stimulated Artists by supporting them. Under her reign they were able to work and produce.

The program was filled with surprising performances by artists from all over the country. Not necessarily professinals, but amateurs of the highest level, and all driven by their passion for their art form. Members of the organizations that no longer receive funding.

Clearly the whole program was an act of revolt against the present government, which has been cutting subsidies to first minor and off later more and more major art institutions.

Today I searched for a certain graffiti artist who was active in Amsterdan around 1980. To my surprise I discovered a publication by the Dutch weekly named "De Groene Amsterdammer" (Green Amsterdammer) dedicated to the Arts of that time. With the title Long Live The Queen. Since the cover photo shows a punker, hailing form the U.K. the title probably refers to Queen Elisabeth, but that doesn't matter.

In my mind, in the mind of all Dutch artists Queen Beatrix, now Princess Beatrix will always be the number one patron of the arts.

Judith van Praag's curator insight, January 22, 11:47 AM

Only in Dutch, a 7-part series about the aftermath of WWII created by Ad van Liempt. The Netherlands 1945 -1950.

Professor Ies Lipschits referred to the return of Holocaust survivors to the Netherlands as the "kleine sjoa" the small Shoah or Small Holocaust. The welcome back was incredibly negative.

What we don't see/ what the U.N. misses re: Sinterklaas and his Moorish Helper

What we don't see/ what the U.N. misses re: Sinterklaas and his Moorish Helper | Dutch Stuff | Scoop.it
Judith van Praag's insight:

Will get into this later. All I want to say for the moment, in 1984 the opening night of The Blacks took place on December 7. The majority of the black cast was upset because try-outs fell on Sinterklaas eve or the bisshop's birthday, this would mean they couldn't celebrate Sinterklaas with there family.

As for the the history of slavery and the role the Netherlands played, I'd say we all have to live up to our responsibility, acknowledge the mistake.

Destroying the effidence is nothing short from ultra denial.

If anything, the Sinterklaas celebration offers excellent teaching and learning moment. Not to be wasted.

Judith van Praag's insight:

After WWII the Dutch still had limited access to food, you needed ditribution coupons for most everything. On top of that everything was sold bulk, weighed behind the counter by the grocer. America already had its super markets, and the Netherlands would get them too, by golly!

Ann Goldstein leaves "Stedelijk" - Municipal - Contemporary Art Museum

Ann Goldstein leaves "Stedelijk" - Municipal - Contemporary Art Museum | Dutch Stuff | Scoop.it
Zonder kunst geen democratie
Judith van Praag's insight:

Check out Steven ten Thije's public goodbye, which may be read as a thank you note, for Ann Goldstein, director of Amsterdam's municipal museum of contemporary art.

Municipal museum of contemporary art. Taste those words, they mean something different in English than in Dutch. "Het Stedelijk" speaks of ownership, you might as well say "Our Municipal". Believe me, it's completely different from "Our Contemporary".

Our Municipal spells: it's ours, hands off, and if you don't get that, if you don't hear the nuance you clearly don't understand how we operate. We are the Dutch, we own the Netherlands, regained land, dikes and polders build by concessus —the polder model.

Somehow I feel something got lost in translation, and sadly that's what some/ many predicted from the onset of the relationship between the foreign curator and the museum.

Was a longterm relationship in the stars? It seems not. More than a fling, yes, but not quit a match made in heaven.

Still, both will be the better for having met, for having made firework together.

My first association is glamour, but the G of Glamping stands for "geniet" meaning, enjoy, the L for luxury. Scroll down for a video where the pictures say more than a 1000 words.

The images remind me of my own childhood, until elementary school started, my parents and I would stay in the country from April through September. One of the reasons why we moved from Amsterdam to the country once I had to attend grade school. A vacation on a farm can be heaven for children and adults alike.

The Best Escort in Town

The Best Escort in Town | Dutch Stuff | Scoop.it
A touring author's driver, guide and confidant can make a long day endurable.
Judith van Praag's insight:

Many a time I saw some of Seattle's best author escorts in action during the nine years that I volunteered for author events at the Seattle Public Library. I'll attest to the notion that the author's escort can be the traveler's best friend on any of the many locations a writer hits on book tour.. As this article makes clear, a good escort is a dream come true for the wary author landing in yet another city.

On my birthday in 1998 I received "The Obervation Deck: A Tool Kit for Writers" by Naomi Epel, who is followed by Bridget Kinsella for this article. The Deck, or rather the box filled with a book and a deck of cards is a treat, for writers and readers alike.
