Purcelane - shalots hotch potch -sjalotjesstamppot

"Tart" I said to the sales person at the farmer's market in West Seattle. Since he thought he had to educate me, he said the purcelane was not tart.

But I spoke from memory. Purcelane, was the tart summer vegetable I grew to like albeit with reservations, my mouth puckers each time I see or even hear about this great source of iron in our diet.

In the Netherlands purselane (porselein) is served steamed, or used for hotchpotch. Mix coarsely chopped purselain with hot mashed potatoes and fold in and over until the vegetable has wilted. Nutmeg is a good spice to complement the slightly tart flavor of the greens.

Ferdinand Dorsman In Memoriam Grant | Dutch Art Events

Today a visitor to the Seattle Public Library told me Ferdinand Dorsman was dead. Just like that. "Ferdinand is dood." No softening of the blow. I'm devastated and that while I only met the man once.

Last year in October, I showed Ferdinand around in the Seattle Central Public Library designed by Rem Koolhaas/ OMA, and afterward we had dinner at Salty's overlooking Elliott Bay. He longed for just good American food, no "liflafjes" or over the top culinary art. Over salmon and halibut we found out we had a lot of acquaintances in common, and not just that, we discovered that we were born in the same beach town in the Netherlands.

We parted like old friends, and he said he'd be back with his partner.

I'm so sad we won't see him again. So sad for Giulio Bono, his sons and other loved ones.

And I'm also sad for the Dutch Art community, including myself. We couldn't have had a better Ambassador of the Arts.

R.I.P. Ferdinand, you are remembered.

Luxury Edition of Hergé inspired novellas by contemporary Flemish authors - Lannoo

Not in English, not focussed on Hergé cartoons, and yet an item Hergé fans (who read Dutch) must enjoy. To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Tin-tin and the 70th birthday of His Royal Highness King Albert II contemporary authors were invited to write novellas around one of the Tin-tin characters. The stories all take place on one of the regular routes of King Albert. Something else, for sure!

What's Dutch about Best Bars?

Coming to the U.S. I had to get used to the notion that places where people go to have a drink  are often dark dungeons. The so called "taverns" hiding behind blind windows, emphasizing the stigma that lies on enjoying a drink.

So it's with great joy that I share this link to beautiful drinking holes in Seattle.

Proost! Cheers! Lechaim! Santé! and a whole lot more best wishes for all of you out there who don't believe drinking is to be done in faceless cave.

From windmill sail cloth to art work in oils

The palette of Dutch born artist Peet Quintus has always been inspired by Dutch traditions and cultural symbols. Therefore the windmill plays an important role in Peet’s work.

His latest paintings are made on mostly dark brown windmill sail cloth used on a mill's sails during milling.

In order to create his oil paintings on the canvas, Peet first primes them. Many art works still contain old details such as ropes and repaired pieces that refer to their former use.

All of his oil paintings on this particular windmill sail cloth are marked with a certificate indicating from which Dutch windmill the cloth originates, plus the National Monument registration number of  the said mill.

Reading the above made me think of the setI designed for The Dance and The Railroad. Working with a low budget, I acquired old drop cloths used by set painters to paint the back drop and floor cloth. There's nothing like recycling materials!
