(VEN) - DuPont Vietnam in cooperation with The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) organized the Vietnam Food Security Forum in HCMC with the participation of leading agricultural scientists and more than 100 businesses operating in the southern region. DuPont Executive Vice President James C Borel talked about the global food security problem and Vietnam in an interview with Vietnam Economic News' reporters Kim Chi and Thu Hien.

Food Security | Vietnam | Although Vietnam's agriculture sector has created remarkable achievements but the income of farmers are still very low. Hence, a food security forum to discuss about the sustainable agriculture development is very essential. According to the MARD, the country needs 36 million tons of rice to meet the demand of about 130 million people in 2035, while the World Bank predicted that by 2030, Vietnam's total food production would be reduced by 5 million tons from major causes of pests and low technologies.
Food Security | Vietnam | The food security challenges facing by Vietnam include rising population, decreasing land for cultivation, climate change and the pressing need to feed Vietnam’s growing population. According to one of the speaker, to achieve food security in Vietnam, there is a need to apply technologies in food value chain production, apply technologies to increase food productivity, food stores and food packaging.
Farra Siregar, DuPont Vietnam’s General Director said Vietnam has become the world’s important rice exporter but reasonable prices are considered to be the key to ensuring food security. So, it is necessary to apply scientific and technological advances in food production.
"At DuPont we believe that there is a science to feeding the growing population. It will take all of us working collaboratively to ensure that every person has enough nutritious food to eat,” said Borel at the Vietnam Food Security Forum in Ho Chi Minh City.
