Building upon a process- and context-oriented information quality framework, this paper seeks to map and explore what we know about the ways in which young users of age 18 and under search for information online, how they evaluate information, and how their related practices of content creation, levels of new literacies, general digital media usage, and social patterns affect these activities.

The Civic and Political Significance of Online Participatory Cultures and Youth Transitioning to Adulthood | DMLcentral

ABSTRACT /

Most existing scholarship that measures the impact of the Internet on civic or political engagement focuses on political uses of new media. Drawing on two large panel studies, we find that youth engagement in nonpolitical online participatory cultures may serve as a gateway to participation in important aspects of civic and political life, including volunteering, community problem-solving, protest activities, and political voice. These relationships remain statistically significant for both datasets, even with controls for prior levels of civic and political participation and a full range of demographic variables. While politically driven online participation is clearly worthy of attention, these findings indicate that it should not be seen as the only relevant bridge from online activity to civic and political engagement.

Second Wave Youth Arts

Second Wave Youth Arts | DSqM: The Deptford Square Mile | Scoop.it

SECOND WAVE YOUTH ARTS

Set up in 1982, and based in Deptford, SE London, Second Wave is a venue and a meeting place for young people. We run regular youth-centred Platform Events and workshops for young performers and writers 12-24 years.

Our workshop programme supports the independent voices of young people expressed through their own performance work and creative narratives.

Our programme develops young people's confidence and skills through accessible and affordable workshops in drama, singing, dance, rap/lyrics, new writing, music, visual arts and production.

Our award-winning volunteers' programme offers progression into apprenticeships with pathways into high education, training and employment.

Second Wave is led by the creative intelligence of young people, and reflects the reality of their lives in a demanding urban environment.

From our base in Deptford and other outreach settings, our community projects, led by young people, aim to break down stereotypes, and enhance local democracy.

We are a registered charity established in 1982, supported by regular funding from Arts Council England.

"In youth arts you are actively involved in making something as a young artist – not simply learning about the arts. This means seizing opportunities, taking risks and inspiring change."

What is Placemaking? - Management of public spaces

What is Placemaking? - Management of public spaces | DSqM: The Deptford Square Mile | Scoop.it

Placemaking is a multi-faceted approach to the planning, design and management of public spaces. Put simply, it involves looking at, listening to, and asking questions of the people who live, work and play in a particular space, to discover their needs and aspirations. This information is then used to create a common vision for that place. The vision can evolve quickly into an implementation strategy, beginning with small-scale, do-able improvements that can immediately bring benefits to public spaces and the people who use them.

A pedagogy of abundance or a pedagogy to support human beings? Participant support on massive open online courses

"Abstract

This paper examines how emergent technologies could influence the design of learning environments. It will pay particular attention to the roles of educators and learners in creating networked learning experiences on massive open online courses (MOOCs). The research shows that it is possible to move from a pedagogy of abundance to a pedagogy that supports human beings in their learning through the active creation of resources and learning places by both learners and course facilitators. This pedagogy is based on the building of connections, collaborations, and the exchange of resources between people, the building of a community of learners, and the harnessing of information flows on networks. This resonates with the notion of emergent learning as learning in which actors and system co-evolve within a MOOC and where the level of presence of actors on the MOOC influences learning outcomes."
