File sharing is exploding, and the studios are barely keeping up fighting the pirates: That’s the gist of a WSJ story detailing NBC’s anti-piracy work. But is it really that simple?

NBC’s Los Angeles-based anti-piracy unit sent out 3.9 million takedown notices for pirated content last year, according to a Wall Street Journal report from Monday. Three years earlier, NBC sent out just 427,000 such notices.

More people are streaming music online — leading to more companies vying to be their providers. It looks like YouTube is finally set to enter the market, which could be good news for musicians and studios that crave higher royalties.

YouTube, which has been quietly talking to music studios for months, is poised to launch a streaming service this year according to Fortune. The report says the service will mimic Spotify by offering listeners a choice between an ad-supported model and a paid subscription version.
