File sharing is exploding, and the studios are barely keeping up fighting the pirates: That’s the gist of a WSJ story detailing NBC’s anti-piracy work. But is it really that simple?

NBC’s Los Angeles-based anti-piracy unit sent out 3.9 million takedown notices for pirated content last year, according to a Wall Street Journal report from Monday. Three years earlier, NBC sent out just 427,000 such notices.

LONDON - After months of wrangling, Britain's political parties have reached a compromise that will establish a new press regulator based on suggestions of the Leveson Inquiry, which was launched in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal.

UnitedByPhotography's insight:

Publishers, such as News Corp.'s News International, as well as the owners of the Telegraph and Daily Mail newspapers, have been opposed to statutory regulation, and it will be interesting to see if they interpret the final compromise as acceptable or not.

 

All parties have said that victims of press abuse will be big winners. Hacked Off, the non-profit supported by the likes of Hugh Grant, lauded the new royal charter.

Injure someone’s feelings online and you or your company can be sued for defamation, no matter how silly the slight. Josh King, of Avvo.com, says such nuisance suits — known by the acroynm SLAPP — stifle free speech.

The thing about defamation is that the law requires having a certain thickness of skin.  Defamation is not just something written about you that you don’t like.  It’s got to be demonstrably false. It’s got to be damaging. And it can’t just be someone’s opinion.

The Black Solicitors Network is the primary voice of black solicitors in England and Wales; committed to achieving equality of access, retention and promotion of black solicitors.

The basic critera are that applicants must be a solicitor, barrister or advocate qualified in one of the UK jurisdictions, having completed a training contract or pupillage by the start of the appointment.

Judicial Assistants are paid a salary (£35,188) and work as civil servants for the duration of their ten-month contract.
