Portuguese drug decriminalisation needs to be strengthened by combating stigma and discrimination

Socio-economic deprivation is associated with drug dependence, but not drug use (von Sydow, et al., 2002).
Julian Buchanan's insight:

Socio-economic deprivation is associated with drug dependence, but not drug use (von Sydow, et al., 2002). It is also clear that countries with a lower level of social inequality and greater social cohesion have smaller populations of problem drug users per head of population. Thus, addressing poverty and social inequality over the long term will have a significant impact on levels of problem drug use.

Rastafarian man in UK caught growing cannabis for his pain relief gets sent to prison | Drugs, Society, Human Rights & Justice | Scoop.it
A devout Rastafarian from Milton Keynes, caged for growing cannabis in his front room, had his sentence cut after top judges heard he smokes the drug for pain relief - and as an essential “sacrament”.
Julian Buchanan's insight:

And they say people don't go to prison for cannabis?

What a waste of tax payers money and more importantly what an inhumane and unjust intrusion on his life.

Economists Predict Marijuana Legalization Will Produce Overall 'Public-Health Benefits'

Economists Predict Marijuana Legalization Will Produce Overall 'Public-Health Benefits' | Drugs, Society, Human Rights & Justice | Scoop.it
"Based on existing empirical evidence, we expect that the legalization of recreational marijuana in Colorado and Washington will lead to increased marijuana consumption coupled with decreased alcohol consumption. As a consequence, these states will experience a reduction in the social harms resulting from alcohol use. While it is more than likely that marijuana produced by state-sanctioned growers will end up in the hands of minors, we predict that overall youth consumption will remain stable. On net, we predict the public-health benefits of legalization to be positive."

Conclusions: This study details the specifics of facial aging brought on by smoking, which primarily affects the middle and lower thirds of the face. It also demonstrates that a 5-year difference in smoking history can cause noticeable differences in facial aging in twins.

Julian Buchanan's insight:

Terrible ...but I'd still say it's important to allow people to choose to eat, smoke, inhale etc whatever they want with their body, so long as they don't harm others.

The state has a responsibility to ensure people are properly informed.

Why do we continue to believe that letting drug addicts 'hit rock bottom' is a good thing?

Why do we continue to believe that letting drug addicts 'hit rock bottom' is a good thing? | Drugs, Society, Human Rights & Justice | Scoop.it

It’s time to stop punishing and start creating solutions to the walls of intolerance and hatred we’ve built. These steps, though seemingly small, can create a new social context, one that redefines the addict from a non-person to a person, a criminal to a citizen, someone “diseased” to someone who just needs love, belonging and a community, just like me.

Shackled, pregnant & forced to do 90 days drug treatment : USA Case challenges 'fetal protection' law | Drugs, Society, Human Rights & Justice | Scoop.it
When Alicia Beltran was 12 weeks pregnant, she took herself to a health clinic about a mile from her home in Jackson, Wis., for a prenatal checkup.

According to the police report, the officers took Beltran to a hospital, where she underwent a doctor’s exam. Her pregnancy was found to be healthy and normal, her lawyers say. Police then took her to Washington County Jail to await a hearing – hours later, she was led into a courtroom, handcuffed and shackled at the ankles, where a county judge ordered her to spend 90 days in a drug treatment center.

"From a scientific perspective, however, the extent to which use of cannabis leads to an increased incidence of schizophrenia, independently of confounding characteristics and separate from effects of chronic intoxication, remains uncertain. Whether preventing cannabis use will have any substantial impact on preventing psychotic disorders in the population, or within specific subgroups at risk, is yet to be adequately determined."
