Rap Artist Chief Keef gets 20 days in jail after testing positive for cannabis | Drugs, Society, Human Rights & Justice | Scoop.it
Keith Cozart, known as the rap artist Chief Keef, was sentenced to 20 days in Cook County Jail this morning after testing positive for marijuana, officials said. Cozart had been required to undergo random drug testing after pleading guilty to a speeding ticket he received over the summer, said Sophia Ansari, a spokeswoman for the Cook County Sheriff's office.

Chief Keef (one of the worst rappers) can not stay off of that darn devils lettuce and ended up back in jail. He has been in and out for a little bit now but should stay in so we do not have to hear his songs.

PODCAST 60mins Ending Prohibition With a Hangover by Julian Buchanan

PODCAST 60mins Ending Prohibition With a Hangover by Julian Buchanan | Drugs, Society, Human Rights & Justice | Scoop.it

This socially constructed bifurcation of substances established a Drugs Apartheid that outlawed particular drugs so what we have is a 'War between Drugs' that ultimately became a war on people who used substances that didn't have government approval.

Black and Minority Ethnic groups and the discarded working class have been major casualties in this war. Radical drug law reform rooted in scientific evidence and human rights is needed to end the oppressive and unjust drug laws that have caused more harm than good.

Julian Buchanan's insight:

While there is some understandable excitement and celebration at seeing prohibition begin to crumble - these are critical, if not dangerous times of change. Using international examples this lecture will outline the need for change, critically evaluate the risks of particular drug policy changes and explore principles to underpin drug law reform.

All Black star Cory Jane and his wife Amie would consider moving their family to the US if it would help with the treatment of their epileptic son. - New Zealand Herald
Julian Buchanan's insight:

It's a disgrace that cannabis hasn't been widely available to help prevent seizures.
It's a slur on our humanity that to administer a herb to someone who has an untreatable condition has been made a serious offence that could lead to imprisonment and would result in life long consequences.
The madness extends further because if Cory Jane was convicted in New Zealand for possession of cannabis he probably wouldn't be allowed into the USA - despite a number of states having legalised the drug

ARTICLE: Young adult sequelae of adolescent cannabis use: an integrative analysis | Drugs, Society, Human Rights & Justice | Scoop.it

"Adverse sequelae of adolescent cannabis use are wide ranging and extend into young adulthood. Prevention or delay of cannabis use in adolescence is likely to have broad health and social benefits. Efforts to reform cannabis legislation should be carefully assessed to ensure they reduce adolescent cannabis use and prevent potentially adverse developmental effects.:

Julian Buchanan's insight:

Is heavy and or early use of cannabis a symptom of a shared aetiology or is it the causal factor?

If it’s the former, and I think it more likely the case, tackling cannabis fails to address the real underlying problems among these teenagers.

Would research that correlated teens who sleep in bed for long periods during the day produce similar associations?

Julian Buchanan's insight:

Well said!

What I don't want to see is cannabis exclusively controlled by BigPharma & BigBusiness and cultivation for personal use remain an offence.

So we could start today by simply decriminalising personal possession and cultivation for personal use of cannabis ...then begin the more difficult task of exploring regulation models.
But Uruguay have provided an excellent model to adopt.

As more Americans express interest in the healing potential of medical marijuana, the boardroom brass of Big Pharma has become noticeably concerned about how these changing opinions might affect their bottom line.  It is for this reason the pharmaceutical companies have found it in their best interest to keep lawmakers, as well as the pill-popping public, at bay regarding the truth about cannabis by paying hefty salaries to members of academia to perpetuate modern day Reefer Madness.

When the Uruguayan parliament approved a 44-article bill legalizing the production, sale and consumption of marijuana in November 2013, international media and policymakers took note.

Uruguay’s legislation “didn’t come out of nowhere” says Geoffrey Ramsey, a U.S. journalist and researcher who was living in Uruguay as the debate heated up.

There were 10 key factors at play when legalization transformed from an idea into reality. And any region, nation or policymaker looking to do the same should take note:

By 2025 New Zealand wants to become 'a tobacco free country' so 'regulation' is getting tough. | Drugs, Society, Human Rights & Justice | Scoop.it
Increasing tobacco tax by 20 per cent a year would still not be enough to make the country smokefree by 2025, research suggests.
Julian Buchanan's insight:

While nobody should be subject to harm from other people's lifestyles, it is a human right to be able to consume in the bodies what they want so long as they are not harming others.  The vision isn't to ban tobacco but make it difficult.

There's a fine balance between protecting freedoms and choice, and rolling out oppressive drug regulation.

Remember drug regulation can be used for bad policies as well as good policies - there is an illusion that drug regulation is necessarily a positive move. It isn't it depends upon how it's managed.
