One of the many recommendations in the Law Commission’s report on the Misuse of Drugs Act was for the introduction of courts for Alcohol and other Drugs. Officials have been working with the judiciary to plan a pilot and, later this year, Drug Courts will be established in Auckland for a maximum load of 100 ‘participants’ and a five-year pilot period.
Drugs Courts don't have the best reputation and the pilot appears to be based upon an abstinence and disease model of addiction seeing people as 'addicts'. As the USA led conference to help launch the Drug Court Pilot held in Auckland NZ included a session:
'Addiction and the Brain. Why do people use alcohol and other drugs and how does this affect them? This session will explore the science behind addiction, and what the most current research tells us about this powerful, pervasive, and destructive phenomenon' ... and how 'Neuro-imaging has yielded new evidence about the effects of marijuana use and alcohol consumption on the brain'.
