Ohio Officials say Drug Users Abusing Pet Medications - WSAZ-TV

Ohio Officials say Drug Users Abusing Pet Medications
WSAZ-TV
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The war on prescription drug abuse is now hitting somewhere you'd least expect: the local vets office.
Christina C's insight:

As shown in this article, people will try anything to get high. That includes taking medications that are meant for your pets. Police and community members have said that there is a possible abuse of these drugs. And that people are abusing their animals, taking them to the vet, and getting high off the medications that the vetenarians are prescribing for the animals. The Ohio Veternary Medical Association is trying to fight back by training their vetenarians to spot and recognize any signs of abuse, and by passing a bill in the Ohio House.

Christina C's insight:

This article is a good example of how doing drugs can go from bad to worse. A 27 year old man named Adrian Montesano was killed in a police shoot out after attemping to rob a Walgreens. Montesano's friend who is unnamed, said that Montesano was struggling with an addiction and that he started hanging out with a bad crowd. He was doing good before, he had his own air conditoning repair business. But Montesano's friend suspects he started hanging out with them again and that's why he tried to rob Walgreens because he needed money for the drugs.

Drug Addiction: No Victim, No Crime?
Evening Sun (subscription) (blog)
If there is one thing that most experts agree on regarding the drug problem in America, it's that the “War on Drugs” isn't working.
Christina C's insight:

This blogger believes that the "War on Drugs" is not working. She makes a very good point if your bias is against the "War on Drugs." She comes from a wealthy, upper middle class family point of view on drug addiction and states that "drug addiction is a serious problem for everyone, everywhere." That it's not just the "losers" who become addicts. People would benefit from reading this article because of the different perspective and the fact that it goes against what a lot of people think drug addiction affects.

Woman Talks About Meth Addiction
KELOLAND TV
"I hit a bottom that I didn't even know was possible. Meth took everything from me," Walters said. Walters spent three years hooked on the drug before she was caught by law enforcement.
Christina C's insight:

This is a good article to put on my page because it talks about a woman who went through a meth addiction, overcame it, and is using her experience to help other meth addicts. Her story can help other addicts get their life back together. She struggled for three years before she was sent to Keystone Treament and her relationships with her sons and other family members were hurt by her addiction. Now she is two and half years clean and is counseling other addicts as they go through the same treatment she went through. This article should be shared and passed on not only because of the inspiring story, but so we can spread awareness of, and put a stop to the drugs traveling both east to west, and north to south.

FIRST ON 3 INVESTIGATION: Court documents outline former deputy's addiction ...
Christina C's insight:

This article is about a a deputy named Joseph LeBlanc who was second in command of the Vice and Narcotics Division in Wilmington, NC. While on the job he became addicted to the drug Oxycodone. How he was getting his hands on the drugs was by filing fake requests, court documents, and other important legal documents with fake signatures. When he was caught, he was given the option to go to rehab in California and he took it. But when they gave him job back he got addicted again, and it turns out he never went to rehab. Now he's in jail under a $500,000 bond. This goes to show you how far a person with a lethal addiction will go to get those sensations. This should be on my page because it shows you how messed up the brain can get if hooked on a drug, and that anyone surrounded by, or in an environment with drugs, can get addicted.

Students take it to help them focus on a tests and get better grades. However, some students who don't have ADHD are starting to abuse the use of Adderall and selling it. According to the health care information company IMS, ADHD prescriptions for 10-19 year olds rose 26% since the year 2007. Christina C's insight:

This article gives good insight of drugs in schools and the influence they can cause in the community. Three students who attended Neuqua Valley High School died from heroin overdoses in the same year. The deaths moved a student who also attended the highschool, to make a documentary video of heroin and other drug users at the school. The documentary showed in the school library and it made an impact on the students and parents who came to the viewing. Unfortunately, the amount of heroin being used hasn't changed and there are still students dying, but this is only the beginning of a movement.

Best Drug Rehabilitation's Founder Per Wickstrom Interviews Former MLBer Ted ...
Christina C's insight:

During the interview between Best Drug Rehabilition's

founder Per Wickstrom, and former MLB pitcher with the San Diego Padres and current Wall Street executive Ted Dutcher, Dutcher makes a good point. He says that we need to "break down barriers that are happening at home and in family life." And that we need to educate parents and offer the resources they need to be a loving and firm family, so that they don’t become enablers to their children’s addictions in the future. Wickstrom is supporting this idea by envisioning a "Addiction 101" class where they can bring in parents and teach them how to communitcate to their kids to prevent them from going down the wrong path. Dutcher is right about teaching families how to prevent addiction because a lot of people often become addicts because they are trying to fill a hole that often stems from their home life. If a person has a loving home, maybe they'll think twice about doing drugs.

Christina C's insight:

This article is about how  developing substance addiction might be connected to "gender-specific personality traits". Substance addiction is a term doctors use to describe "substance abuse that results in chemical dependence and a strongly dysfunctional pattern of substance-related behavior." Such as, alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, and cocaine. Studies show that people are affected by drugs differently based on the fact that they are male or female. In the U.S., males tend to become addicted to substances more than women, but women face problems more severe than those encountered by men. The common personality traits that have a connection to increased chances for substance abuse and substance addiction are the heightened tendency to be in situations and environments that house substance use, a heightened tendency to act impulsively without considering the consequences of one’s action, and an increased tendency to experience negative emotional states that disturb one’s sense of emotional well-being. People would benefit from seeing this article on my page because some of them might have these personality traits and they can learn to check themselves before they reck themselves.

Priscilla Li's curator insight, December 10, 2013 4:56 PM

A study published in "Drug and Alcohol Dependence," suggested that gender and personality may contribute to the effects psychoactive drugs have on individuals. With different drugs, women may be more quick to suffer from the health problems than men do. Individuals who are impulsive and often experience negative emotional states are more likely to abuse drugs and become addicted.

This study could help provide more insight into the toll psychoactive drugs take on certain individuals. Scientists and counselors could maybe use these differences in gender and personality to help drug addicts.
