The corridor of uncertainty: Completion rates in online education

The corridor of uncertainty: Completion rates in online education | Dropout in elearning courses | Scoop.it

« It's about creating a sense of belonging where students learn how to learn in a supportive environment and where no one ever needs to feel they're on their own. This environment can be created and facilitated with the help of educational technology but it can also be created in a more traditional classroom environment. The basic ingredients are the same and it's that we should be discussing more. Let's talk about learning and take the e- as default.»

Student Persistence in Online Courses: Understanding the Key Factors | Faculty Focus

Who should be taking online courses? Are online courses equally appropriate for all students? Can any content be taught in an online format or do some kinds of material lend themselves to mastery in an electronic environment?
Paula Silva's insight:

Maryellen Weimer indicates Carolyn Hart’s research on the issue of Student Persistence in Online Courses

Important definitions:
-- Persistence - “the ability to complete an online course despite obstacles or adverse circumstances” (p. 30);
-- Attrition -“withdrawal from an online course” (p. 30)
- Factors identified in student persistence in online courses: satisfaction with online learning; a sense of belonging to a learning community; peer and family support; time management skills; increased communication with the instructor.
