Parrot's New Fixed-Wing Drone Is a 50 MPH Party in the Sky

Parrot's New Fixed-Wing Drone Is a 50 MPH Party in the Sky | Drones | Scoop.it
The consumer drone explosion of the last few years has been mostly limited to quadcopter-style multirotors. Until now. Meet the Disco, Parrot’s super-fast drone party in the sky.
Enrico Bazan's insight:

The new fixed-wing drone is the fist consumer camera drone of its kind. It’s got a rotor on its tail, but the whole structure of the vehicle is really more like that of a plane. The Disco’s got a 1080p HD, digitally stabilized camera in its nose, with two big wings forming a “v” around it. Each wing wing has steering flaps which are controlled by motors.

Building a rope bridge with flying machines - YouTube

The video shows quadrocopters autonomously assembling a rope bridge. This is part of a body of research in aerial construction, a field that addresses the construction of structures with the aid of flying machines.
Enrico Bazan's insight:

The vehicles are equipped with a motorized spool that allows them to control the tension acting on the rope during deployment. A plastic tube guides the rope to the release point located between two propellers. The external forces and torques exerted on the quadrocopter by the rope during deployment are estimated and taken into account to achieve compliant flight behavior.

The arena is equipped with a motion capture system that provides vehicle position and attitude measurements. Algorithms are run on a computer and commands are then sent to the flying machines via a customized wireless infrastructure.

Building and Crashing: Tau Labs and CyPhy "Level Up"

Building and Crashing: Tau Labs and CyPhy "Level Up" | Drones | Scoop.it
This is a really neat drone project that removes the need for a gimbal while flying by being able to navigate around and remain level.
Enrico Bazan's insight:

So as much as vectored thrust is fun, I really like traditional flying. The control authority of pointing the motors in the direction you want to haul ass is huge. However, this motivated me to work out something I've wanted forever: how to take an arbitrary set of motor positions and angles and calculate the mixer.

Drones’ Next Job: Construction Work

Drones’ Next Job: Construction Work | Drones | Scoop.it
Construction-equipment maker Komatsu has plans to solve a potential shortage of construction workers in Japan: Let drones and driverless bulldozers do part of the work.
Enrico Bazan's insight:

Komatsu expects to overlay civil-engineering plans onto the drones’ 3-D models and then load that data into its unmanned bulldozers and excavators. As the machinery dig holes and level land, they will also use onboard sensors to collect data on how the site’s layout is changing.

Amazon wants an army of drones to chase you down to get you your package

Amazon wants an army of drones to chase you down to get you your package | Drones | Scoop.it
The application outlines a process whereby an Amazon customer orders something small—a book, perhaps, or maybe a box of Tide—via the Amazon app and selects the “Bring It To Me” delivery option. The nearest drone delivery system hopper would then saddle the drone with the order and deploy it to the location of the customer’s smartphone.
Enrico Bazan's insight:

The filing also says that Amazon wants to its drones to communicate with each other while in the air, “to share weather information, location information, routing information, landing areas.”

Civil Drones (RPAS) | EASA

Civil Drones (RPAS) | EASA | Drones | Scoop.it

EASA is following a new regulatory approach for safely operating remotely piloted aircraft. This flexible approach, called ‘Concept of Operations’, has been based on input from users and manufacturers of RPAS and provides a set of rules which are proportionate and risk based. In other words, safety requirements are in relation to the risk an activity poses to the operator and to third parties (e.g. general public). The greater the risk the higher the requirements.

Enrico Bazan's insight:

This is done in order to ensure there is no compromise in safety, but there is a flexible environment for this promising industry to grow.
