Though Cecile Schott is not strictly speaking doing drone, her latest pieces have that feeling, and occasional actual passages of drone. La Monte Thornton Young (born October 14, 1935) is an American avant-garde composer, musician, and artist. Young is generally recognized as the first minimalist composer.[1] His works have been included among the most important and radical post-World War II avant-garde, experimental, and contemporary music.[according to whom?] Young is especially known for his development of drone music. Both his proto-Fluxus and "minimal" compositions question the nature and definition of music and often stress elements of performance art. Born in Bern, Idaho, he moved with his family several times in childhood, while his father searched for work before settling in Los Angeles, California. He was raised as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He graduated from John Marshall High School and studied at Los Angeles City College. In LA's jazz milieu, he played alongside notable musicians including Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry and Billy Higgins.

Drone music can be understood as dealing with the specific vs. the general. "Pure" drone emphasizes the general - a "wash" of sound. But there must be some specifics there too, often harmonic frequencies or repeated figures, or else it would be featureless and uninteresting. Then there are drone pieces that emphasize the specific - using the drone wash as a background over which to lay a rhythmic or arhythmic, perhaps even melodic, track. On this allbum M. Beckmann experiments wth varying combinations of specifics and generalities, sometimes even using an intermittent drone wash as a specific against a general background of spikier electronics or field recordings. Fortunately, his work never ventures into melody or fixed rhythm, preserving an overall character pleasing to the "drone mind." Delete the scoop?

from otherminds.org - "Ellen Fullman has been developing the Long String Instrument for more than twenty years, and it has evolved into an astounding expression of artistic individuality. The instrument is based on the longitudinal mode of vibration, with one hundred long wires strung over approximately ninety feet. The strings are attached to the soundboard, much in the same way a harp is constructed. The string goes through a hole in the soundboard, a loop is made, a pin is set in the loop, then the string is pulled against that and attached to the wall at the other end of the room. Some of the wires pass through resonator boxes at sixty and thirty feet, and the bass wires extend for the full distance. Tuning is accomplished in just intonation with ‘C’ clamps at harmonic intervals. The instrument is played is by stroking the string with rosin-covered hands and walking along its length, creating a compression wave, rather than a transverse wave, which would result from the action of plucking. Fullman has also developed various extended techniques to evoke different textures from the instrument." Delete the scoop?

Natural Snow Buildings are a duo from France that make layered drone music that is rather lovely! This song builds so gradually you hardly notice the amount of instruments that develop over the course of the song.
