Chinese Global Hawk UAV - UAV Pictures,

Chinese Global Hawk performance is only half the original, using the old engine. China has no intention to follow the United States, there is no UAV development in the strategic blind pursuit of targets, but rather adhere to the actual demand-led. Canada Kanwa Asian Defense said, the photos and videos of Xianglong strategic drone which is called Chinese Global Hawk have been circulating on the Internet for several days.

Targeted Killings Follow ‘Rigorous Standards’

Yesterday, the Obama administration offered its first extensive explanation of how American officials decide when to use drones to kill people — a tactic that the government often treats as a classified secret even though it is widely known around the world.

What is must disturbing is the idea that international law progresses through violations.

“Yes, in full accordance with the law — and in order to prevent terrorist attacks on the United States and to save American lives — the United States government conducts targeted strikes against specific Al Qaeda terrorists, sometimes using remotely piloted aircraft, often referred to publicly as drones,”
- John O. Brennan, President Obama’s top counterterrorism adviser

Subcontracting Out War | Battleland | TIME.com

There have been times since 9/11 when there have been as many contractors working for the U.S. military in the war zones as U.S. troops. It’s one way to keep the troop count down.

The Air Force is seeking contractors to “launch” MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper drones all around the world, according to a “pre-proposal conference” notice it posted Thursday.

While the language suggests the contract largely involves maintaining the drone fleet, it also seems to call for more than that:

– Contractor shall launch additional aircraft as required to support a combat air patrol when original aircraft is unable to support mission requirements (ex: maintenance abort, fuel/munitions, etc.).
– Any commander directed sortie shall be deemed ineffective if the aircraft air aborts for any maintenance malfunction during the first 2 hours — Contractor shall launch a spare aircraft to replace the primary aircraft.
– Government may need to divert MQ-1 or MQ-9 aircraft to a base other than the originating base, due to an in-flight emergency, unforeseen maintenance problems, unpredicted weather issues, or for other unforeseen circumstances — Contractor shall recover, service aircraft, upload/download weapons, perform required maintenance, and launch aircraft.

Exploring Unmanned Drones as an Option for China’s First Carrier

If Chinese developments are on par or outpace current U.S. UAV developments, it is possible the Chinese could produce a fully-capable CBD air wing well before a PLAN human-piloted air wing is ready. Even if China staged its UAV progression with its human air wing alternative, it would still allow the PLAN multiple options between an all-drone carrier, all-human or mixed drone-human carrier air wing. This author has not found any direct evidence indicating any of these courses of action. The advent of strike-capable CBDs, however, would be a strategically revolutionary event in carrier aviation and PLAN capability. UAV technologies could empower Chinese weapon developers to “leap-frog” over current technologies directly into future ones. If the Chinese will not have a proficient human PLAN air wing for some time, why not explore the possibility of a revolutionary change in carrier aviation?

CIA drone war in Pakistan in sharp decline - CNN.com

Peter Bergen and Jennifer Rowland says the past year has seen the number of CIA drone strikes in Pakistan plummet...

According to senior U.S. counterterrorism officials, al Qaeda's leadership bench has been so thinned by the drone campaign that there are only two real leaders of the organization left: bin Laden's successor as overall leader of the group, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and Abu Yahya al-Libi. This raises an interesting question: Maybe one of the reasons that the drone campaign has eased off in the past several months is that the CIA has begun to run out of real targets?

CIA Gets More Leeway With Drones

The Obama administration has given the Central Intelligence Agency and U.S.

The Obama administration has given the Central Intelligence Agency and U.S. military greater leeway to target suspected al Qaeda militants in Yemen with drones, responding to worries a new haven is being established from which to mount attacks on the West.

The policy shift, as described by senior U.S. officials, includes targeting fighters whose names aren't known but who are deemed to be high-value terrorism targets or threats to the U.S. The White House stopped short of authorizing attacks on groups of lower-level foot soldiers who are battling the Yemeni government, the officials said.

The U.S. already authorizes drone strikes in Pakistan against those suspected of militant activities but who haven't necessarily been identified by name.

The expansion of the drone campaign in Yemen, to which the administration agreed earlier this month, underlines the difficulty the White House faces in balancing concerns about al Qaeda's apparently growing foothold in southern Yemen against fears that greater CIA and military involvement could propel the U.S. into another regional conflict.

The next step in directing drones: hand signals

An aircraft carrier’s flight deck is constantly monitored, with every launch, recovery and taxi captured on video and broadcast throughout the ship.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a system that allows a camera and computer to recognize the hand signals sailors use to guide unmanned aerial vehicles around the flight deck, a feat that could eventually enable sailors to move a UAV with little more than a wave.

It’s a step in answering one of the biggest challenges in unmanned naval aviation: how to control a UAV on a hectic flight deck while maintaining the cycle of launches and recoveries and keeping everyone safe.

“It would be really nice if we had an unmanned vehicle that can understand human gestures,” said Yale Song, a Ph.D. candidate at MIT who developed a system. His work is the UAV equivalent of an aviation boatswain’s mate flashing hand signals to pilots before a launch and after a trap. In effect, he’s developed a way for a UAV to “see” the signals and identify the commands the signals represent

Obama Admin. Escalates Drone War in Yemen

With at least 9 strikes this year, and 5 already this month, Yemen's fragile new government fulfills its client state role.

The Obama administration has dramatically escalated its secret drone war in Yemen, already exploiting Yemen’s fragile new client state.

There have been 26 reported incidents of drone strikes in Yemen since May, but the pace appears to be accelerating with nine attacks so far this year and at least five this month.

Yemenis voted last month in a referendum on a U.S.-backed transition deal to formally depose former president Ali Abdullah Saleh and elect his deputy Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi, who was the only name on the ballot. The deal granted Saleh total immunity for the crimes he committed while on Washington’s dole and despite the sham, single-candidate “election,” the U.S. praised it as democracy.

AfPak Daily Brief: U.S. offered Pakistan key concessions on drone strikes

The United States in January reportedly offered to give Pakistan advanced notice of drone strikes and implement new limits on the types of targets, in an effort to protect the program from being shut down by Pakistan (AP). Pakistan rejected both concessions, further straining an already damaged bilateral relationship. A CNN piece drawing on the New America Foundation's study of drone strikes in Pakistan shows a sharp decline in drone attacks in 2012 (CNN). U.S. President Barack Obama met with Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Tuesday on the sidelines of an international nuclear summit in Seoul, telling Gilani he hopes the Pakistani parliament's review of ties with the United States is "balanced" and respects the U.S. need to "battle terrorists who have targeted us in the past

WASHINGTON — In a bid to save the CIA’s drone campaign against al-Qaida in Pakistan, U.S. officials offered key concessions to Pakistan’s spy chief that included advance notice and limits on the types of targets. But the offers were flatly rejected, leaving U.S.-Pakistani relations strained as President Barack Obama prepares to meet Tuesday with Pakistan’s prime minister.
