As college is approaching for some and ending for others, drinking is a problem that has been drastically rising within colleges and universities over the past few years. Young adults have died or have been injuried due to binge drinking. As this article states, "Alcohol is the biggest issue, the biggest threat when it comes to substance abuse". Drinking is defined as a problem, but what can it lead to and what are some ways to prevent it?

Alcohol abuse is still a big problem among young people in the US and even here in the Philippines

 

“What we tend to forget is that alcohol is the drug of choice for teens and young adults, and alcohol will kill more people than any other drugs combined,” said Tym Rourke, director of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation’s department of substance use disorders. “Alcohol is the biggest issue, the biggest threat when it comes to substance abuse.”

Talk about drinking all you want, but BINGE drinking is the biggest threat to college students all around. In this article, a student talked of how he ended up in a hospital bed without any recolection of how he had gotten there. Binge drinking involves the consumption of four or more drinks for girls and five or more drinks for guys. Within a college career, peer pressure will attempt to push indiviuals into the direction of binge drinking.

Sexual assault is another incident that occurs when the use of alcohol is present. As the predetor is mostly a man, an article by Emily Yoffe discussed how women can prevent themselves from being raped...stop drinking. Numerous articles and blogs responded with an out cry stating that it is not the fault of women, but the fault of the doer. In a study explained within this article, men will respond with alcohol as the reasoning behind many mistakes that could have easily been avoided. After looking at some of the dangers of drinking, how exacly can it be avoided?

When thinking about college, it is normal to overlook the public effects of drinking. Colleges seem to have their own world annd outside of that eorld are people that can easily reap the consequences of an indiviual choosing to drink and drive. Within this article, it highlights the drinking of young people and what can come out of it. As said in the article, "2,000 college aged students die from drinking related causes each year". It shows that drinking can become a problem that may not be able to be reversed.

In terms of preventing the disease of alcoholism, some colleges are fighting back.

Finally, a way to prevent Alcoholism and Binge Drinking is to make college students aware of the effects of both. Speakers should come during National Alcohol awareness week, although, I admit I had never heard of it until reading this article. Young adults should go through high school having the guidance from teachers and educators to evauate negative peer pressure. Without the help, as said in the article, "Alcoholism will continue to rise in numbers of younger adults."
