Italy's Academy of Silence wants you to travel -- quietly - CNN

Italy's Academy of Silence wants you to travel -- quietly - CNN | Dream Italy | Scoop.it
Many people have heard of the Slow Food movement -- the global organization founded in Italy to counter fast food and the "fast life."Its adherents favor gastronomic tradition and the calm, contemplative enjoyment of cuisine and life in general. Now another idea is taking hold in the wake of Slow Food -- the quest for a quiet Italy. It's embodied in the establishment of a new Academy of Silence (Italian site only), in Tuscany, which seeks to gather a list of the quietest hotels, towns and other places in Italy. We've collected 10 idyllic spots -- among the calmest, quietest and most powerfully relaxing in all Italy -- to suggest to the Academy as prime candidates for inclusion. - - Eremito Hotelito del Alma (Parrano, Umbria) - No TV, no phone, no mini-bar, no air-con. Go to bed when it's dark, wake up at dawn. Candlelight only after sunset. - Stargazing from the Rocca D'Orcia Tower (Siena, Tuscany) - Segesta ruins (Trapani, Sicily) - The Gardens of Ninfa (Norma-Latium, Lazio) - Stagnone Lagoon (Marsala, Sicily) - Linosa (Pelagie Islands) - Civita di Bagnoreggio (Viterbo, Lazio) - Porcini mushroom hunting (Frignano Park, Emilia-Romagna) - Alicudi (Aeolian Islands) - Mt. Soratte (near Rome)

Autumnal bliss for all the family on Puglia's coast

Autumnal bliss for all the family on Puglia's coast | Dream Italy | Scoop.it
After a 45-minute drive past ugly bungalows and industrial areas, we’re ready to turn around and go home — to give up our annual family holiday. Puglia is not your traditional tourist destination, and we can see why. But then, suddenly, we reach a spot between the foothills of the Appenines and the Adriatic. The air is filled with the scent of figs and there are monumental olive trees, more beautiful than any I’ve ever seen. Their trunks are knotted and gnarled, and they stand in the fields like giant soldiers.

Guided food tour of Abruzzo, central Italy, Europe

Guided food tour of Abruzzo, central Italy, Europe | Dream Italy | Scoop.it
[...] For our small group, travelling through Abruzzo offers a snapshot of authentic village life. From the seaside town of Vasto to the hilltop villages surrounding the Apennine Mountains and across the vineyards and silver olive groves of Pescara, there is variation here that we hadn't experienced in Italy before. With a history dating to 1300BC, Vasto has a mix of Benedictine, Spanish and Roman architectural influences. We visit the fishing hamlet of Rocca San Giovanni, where curious wooden contraptions called trabocchi are used by locals to catch fish and prawns.Dinner is a fresh catch of fish. Our chef does little more than lightly batter the scampi (shell on) and flash-fry the calamari with lemon, garlic and oil. It is the best I've ever had. [...]
