Douglas Manganelli: Treating Neck Pain, Exercises Are Better Than Drugs

Engaging in simple exercises relieves neck pain more effectively than depending on drugs, new research has shown. Simple exercises done at home were better at reducing pain than taking drugs like ibuprofen, aspirin or narcotics.

One research found that exercise programs to stretch and strengthen neck improve pain in short and long term as compared to standard treatment with pain relief drugs. But accurately how much exercise to do, what types suits you best, and how frequently it should be done have yet to be identified. Moderate and acute neck pain is one of the most typical reasons for visits to primary care doctors.

If you are interested in doing exercise to help relieve neck pain, make sure to see your physician for diagnosis. Ask if you can get help from a physiotherapist or other professional who can create a personalized exercise program based on your pain intensity, limitation of movement, and present strength. The program should have clearly mentioned goals and include stretching and strengthening exercises.

Ideally, if you are working with a therapist, he or she will advise you through appropriate exercises, encouraging you to work hard enough to see results but not as difficult as to cause further trauma. After sometime, you will be given exercises to do on your own. Before you start exercising independently, make sure you know which exercises to do and how to do them safely. Ask for written guidelines if you are still unsure. Conclusively, Doctors should always recommend exercises or physical therapy for neck pain as "Exercises are for treatment and the drugs are for the symptoms".
