Dzongri A Place with Great Mountains and Snowy Peaks

Dzongri A Place with Great Mountains and Snowy Peaks | Dooars Ecoviillege | Scoop.it

At an altitude of 4,200 m Dzongri is among the best trekking destinations not only in Sikkim but also in India. The sights of the milky white peaks all around Dzongri are bound to keep you gazing with awe. The view from this place has too much to be recommended : a patchwork of green and gold streaked with blue - reminiscent of an abstract etching, framed by the majestic snowcapped peaks shining not very far away.

The awesome presence of the great mountains thrusting their snowy peaks deciphers the strength of the Tethys Sea bulging its muscles to reach this towering height. No less than 14 of them soar majestically to 20,000 ft. plus. The centre of attraction of course remain the Kanchenjunga.

Snowfall is common especially during the winter months. The trekker should be well prepared to face the cold. The temperature may go below freezing point any time around the year.

The trek passes through moss laden, thickly forested ridges teeming with rich flora. Before culminating at the snowy heights of Kanchenjunga, it offers you a view of chestnut, oak, pine, maple and magnolia trees to name a few. An enchanting panorama of snow peaks forming an arc of 270 degrees through the azure sky. This is undeniably one of the most impressive treks in the region.

Dooars Travel a Land That Loads You with the Gifts of Nature | Dooars Ecoviillege | Scoop.it

Dooars is one of the very few places left in the country where nature is so lavish of her green facilities. The unending stretch of virgin forests is cress-crossed by the River Teesta and her innumerable tributaries. Looking like molten silver against their setting sun, beautiful motor able roads cut through the deep forests rich with wild life, mauve hills stand at the end of graceful plains. The forest looks the way the unknown birds in them sing. The melody of the grooves forces you to surrender the sophistries you so carefully cultivated in the city. After a day's journey through the splendid scenery, a happy twilight will bid you retire in the cozy comfort of luxurious log cabins, and leave for you a million dreams of the glorious morrow, that is the Dooars. A land that loads you with the gifts of nature.

Pedong Can Be Your Memorable Weekend Trip

Pedong Can Be Your Memorable Weekend Trip | Dooars Ecoviillege | Scoop.it

Pedong stands on the old silk route that connected India and Tibet through Jelep La. This quaint little hill station is one of the few in North Bengal which an avalanche of tourists has not managed to spoil.

Nearly 22km from Kalimpong, Pedong is a picturesque hamlet situated on a ridge and surrounded by pine forests. It commands a majestic view of the Kanchenjungha.

The Teesta flows for almost the entire length of the journey from New Jalpaiguri to Pedong. We passed the Coronation Bridge, Kalimpong, Algaraha and several other tiny hamlets before reaching Pedong.

Near Pedong are the ruins of Damsang Gadi, a historical fort built in 1690 by the Lepchas. It was at the centre of the long-standing feud with the Dukpas of Bhutan. Later, it was used to ward off the forces of the British East India Company.  Another highlight of the town is the Cross Hill.

This winter visit "India's switzerland", Gangtok

This winter visit "India's switzerland", Gangtok | Dooars Ecoviillege | Scoop.it

Wreathed in clouds, Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim is located on a ridge at a height of 5500 feet. With a spectacular view of the Khangchendzonga, the town provides the perfect base for travel through the state. Once an important transit point for traders traveling between Tibet and India, it is today a busy administrative and business centre and presents an interesting mix of cultures and communities.

It is very widely known and esteemed for its scenic beauty and striking views of the mount Kanchenjunga, 3rd highest peak in the world. The hill resort is about 110 km from Siliguri and it is very well linked with other important places of this region.

With various cultures and religions thriving in perfect concord, Gangtok has proved that 'unity in diversity' exists in Sikkim. Sikkimeses possess firm bonding with their antique customs and traditions. Gangtok is emphatically not behind the rest of the places in the world in terms of modernization and urbanization. The town has broad roads, discothèques, educational institutes, fast-food centres, flyovers, posh markets, state-of-art hospital, and all other advanced and modern comforts that the heart can want for.

Some Attractive Places to Visit in Gangtok

Tsomgo Lake or Changu Lake

Tsomgo Lake is located 35 km away from the city on the Gangtok-Nathula highway. This highway is also a part of the old route that links India and China. Worshipped by Sikkimese, this holy lake is approximately 20 km away from the Nathula Pass, while located at a distance of around 400 km from Lhasa.

The water in this lake has been accumulated from the melting snow on the mountains located nearby. The river Lungtze Chu originates from this lake, which meets Rangpo-chu down its course. According to the history, the colour of water of this lake was studied by Lamas so as to forecast about the future. They believed, if the water had a dark tinge, it indicated a year full of trouble and unrest in the state.

The lake has charming Alpine forests, which is home to some rare animals like the Red Panda, Brahminy ducks and variety of birds. Between the month of May and August one can see a variety of flowers blooming like the Rhododendrous, various species of Primulas, Blue and Yellow Poppies, Iries etc.

Nathula Pass

Nathula Pass, located at a distance of 56 km from Gangtok, is a pass on the Indo-Chinese border. Serving as a trade link between India and China, this park also once served as the main access for Sikkim-Tibet trade. Popularly known as the Silk Route, this pass is at an elevation of 14,450 feet and is rich in diverse alpine flora and fauna. The Nathula Pass is divided into terms 'Nathu' and 'La', which mean 'listening ears' and 'pass' respectively.

At present, tourists are permitted to visit the pass on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. In addition, the Nathula Pass also reduces the travelling distance to some of the major Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage sites such as Lhasa and Mansarovar Lake.

Ganesh Tok

Ganesh Tok, a small temple, is located at a distance of 7 kilometre from Gangtok. Situated next to the television tower on the small hill nestled on Gangtok-Nathula road, the temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesh. This temple is so small in size that at a time, it can only accommodate one person. In addition, one needs to crawl to get inside this temple.

Take a Refreshing Break from the City Life and Enjoy Nature at Samsing Suntalekhola

Take a Refreshing Break from the City Life and Enjoy Nature at Samsing Suntalekhola | Dooars Ecoviillege | Scoop.it

Suntalekhola or Suntaley Khola (also Suntaleykhola) is a small village and a tourist spot in the Darjeeling District of West Bengal. The altitude of the place ranges from 650 to 950 m. It gets it name from a small stream: Suntaley Khola. In Nepali, Suntaley means orange and khola means stream. This place is nearly 5 km from Samsing, which is also a small picturesque serene village. The green patch on the left side of the way to Suntalekhola is amazing and holds many rarities of birds and butterflies.

As you enter Dooars through the National Highway 31, you will cross Malbazar to reach Chalsa. From Chalsa take a left turn and drive on for 15 kms via Meteli to reach Samsing. The last few kilometres drive is a feast for the eyes as you pass through some of the most picturesque tea gardens of Dooars including the Chalsa Tea Garden, Zurantee Tea Garden and Samsing Tea Garden. The road is relatively narrow but there are few vehicles travelling through this route as the road ends at Samsing.

Samsing is full of flying beauties, the birds. The sweet chirping of unknown colorful birds in the serene landscape is a refreshing break from the city life. Step out with a binocular and explore the treasure offered by the nature.

Nearby Attractions of Samsing Suntalekhola….

Faribasti:

Next to Suntalekhola is the small picturesque village of Faribasti. The village has about 50 households and is very well maintained. Rocky island Flower gardens are common in almost all households. Some of the households have started homestay for tourists with active support from naturebeyond. You can walk through the village and its paddy land.

Rocky Island:

Another attractive tourist spot is the `Rocky island nature resort` on the banks of river Murti. This is about 2 km from Samsing. The view of the river and surrounding forests are excellent from Rocky Island but tourist amenities are basic. Accommodation is arranged in small Tents for overnight visitors. The owners of this small resort are true nature lovers and have so far resisted any attempt to commercialise this unique place.

River Murti:

It is one of the most beautiful rivers of Dooars. The small river flows down from Neora Valley National Park and passes through Samsing and eventually meets Jaldhaka river near Gorumara National Park. The river is small enough too crossed on foot during most of the year except the Monsoon months. At Samsing you can approach River Murti either at Rocky Island or near the old forest Bungalow.

Treks Around…..

Several trek routes originate from Suntale Khola. The Neora Valley National Park is adjacent to this place and most treks are organised in the surrounding area of the National Park. Trekkers can take a steep ride to `Tree Fern Point` and `Mo` or `Mo Chaki` for a great view of the Himalayas in one side and the plains of Dooars in the other. The hills of Bhutan and `Jelepla`, the pass connecting Tibet with India, can be seen from here. The most fascinating and thrilling trek leads to the untouched wilderness of Neora Valley National Park. Special permission of the forest department is required in order to organise this trek.

Enjoy the Versatility of Forest at Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary

Enjoy the Versatility of Forest at Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary | Dooars Ecoviillege | Scoop.it

Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is a reserved forest area that initially started as a game sanctuary where children took rides. Mahananda Wildlofe Sanctuary is a very beautiful and crazy forest in North Bengal. It is located on the foothills of the great Himalayas, between the Teesta and Mahananda rivers. Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal. It comes under Darjeeling Wildlife division and can be reached from Siliguri in 30 minutes.

The sanctuary shelters a large population of migratory elephant for a long period of time. The sanctuary has got a tremendous importance in the forest maps of India because of a considerable number of Bengal Tiger. Despite its small size the sanctuary holds atleast 14 majestic animals (according to 2003 census). Apart from these the faunal life of the Mahananda Sanctuary comprises of gaur, leopard, spotted deer, sloth bear, barking deer, wild dog, boar, sambar, along with smaller mammals like porcupine, pangolin, jungle cat, leopard cat, civet etc. recently some hullock gibbon and black capped languor have been released in the sanctuary and they can be seen living with the company of rhesus monkeys.

Mahananda is a home for a large number of colourful feathered animals. The list includes several species of babblers, wagtails, bee eaters, swallows, sun birds, rollers, robins, fly catchers, thrush, drongo, kites, eagles, hornbills, orioles, peacock, fouls, egrets, king fishers, wood pickers and much more.

The sanctuary is an ideal place for wildlife lovers. Several glades, hides and watchtowers have been created near natural saltlicks and streams to invite wild animals. The railway cabin in the abandoned Gulma Station inside the core area of the sanctuary has been converted into a watchtower.

Travelling to Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary

By Road: Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is well connected by road with Darjeeling, Siliguri and other towns of North Bengal. Sukna is the gateway to the sanctuary which is located on the Siliguri-Darjeeling highway. It is just 13 Km from the Siliguri and 30 minutes drive distance from Siliguri.

By Rail: The nearest railhead is at New Jalpaiguri station, adjacent to Siliguri town. Most trains between New Delhi and Guwahati and Kolkata and Guwahati stop at New Jalpaiguri.

By Air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra(IXB), 16km from Siliguri. From NJP station or Bagdogra airport, rent a taxi to take you to Latpanchar bungalow. Do not travel in a small car. A sumo or similar car should be taken since the road, especially the last stretch, is bad.

Travelling inside Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary

There are no motorable roads. The vehicles can come up to the bungalow but no further. You have to walk along the forest trail. DO NOT walk along the trail without a guide since there are elephants, especially during winter time. The forest guards act as guides.

In This New Year 2014 Enjoy Winter with Memorable Pelling Trip | Dooars Ecoviillege | Scoop.it

Around 10 kms from Gyalshing (District Headquarter), Pelling is today emerging as the second biggest tourist destination in the state after Gangtok. Although in itself it is little more than a strip of road lined with hotels, its main USP is the breathtaking view it offers of the Khangchendzonga and surrounding ranges, as well as the easy access it provides to tourist spots in the area.

Pelling is a small town that is situated in the state of Sikkim in the West Sikkim region. The town is a laid back place and it attracts travelers from different parts of the country. Pelling is located near the foothills of Kanchenjunga and one can witness an outstanding view of the mountain from here. There are numerous scenic spots that one can visit in the area. The main attractions in the place are the monasteries that dot the countryside. Visiting these tranquil monasteries is a good way to spend time in the region. Some of the main places are Pemayansgtse Monastery and Sangachoeling Monastery. There are many sculptures and paintings that you can find in these places and they are not crowded. One can get a panoramic view from the Sangachoeling Monastery. If you are visiting during the month of January, you can see a dance called Cham in the Pemayansgtse Monastery.

The Sangay Waterfall is situated 10 kilometers from the town of Pelling and this is a good picnic spot. Another interesting place is the Kchehepalri Lake. The lake is present amidst dense forests and it is considered to be a holy place. It might also be worth checking the Rabdantsey Ruins.

Ban Jhakri Falls a Wonderfull Tourists Spot in East Sikkim

Ban Jhakri Falls a Wonderfull Tourists Spot in East Sikkim | Dooars Ecoviillege | Scoop.it

Located en route to Ranka and 4 km away from Gangtok, the Ban Jhakri Falls Energy Park, lies amidst a lush green valley spread over two acres, surrounded by trees and a gushing mountain river. Ban Jhakri falls is quite a popular place amongst tourists in Gangtok. The Park has a shamanistic theme. Hence, while the location of the Park penetrating the forest spreads seeks to enhance the essence of the occult and the unknown, the place itself is littered with ethnic sculptures and figurines of the Jhakri culture.

The park includes a waterfall and has well laid out trails to wander along with gazebos placed at convenient spots to soothe weary legs while the eyes can continue to marvel over the gushing streams and falls. Sikkimese styled foot bridges add more color to the myriad hued park adorned with exotic flowers of wide variety. A dragon-adorning splash pool beckons longingly at children who can splash about, while the exhibition center also doubles as a cafeteria. Designated fishing spots along the stream further offer visitors a chance to dwell over life matters while waiting for a bite of the local trout.

Lepchajagat literally means the world of the Lepcha. It is not a national park or a wildlife sanctuary. This part of North Bengal used to belong to the Lepcha tribe and was bought from them and turned into a reserve forest.

Lepchajagat is an offbeat destination in the district of Darjeeling in West Bengal. It lies on the road connecting Darjeeling (19 km) with Mirik. Located on a hill slope covered with rhododendron and oaks forests, Lepchajagat offers a rich diversity of nature. It is a place for those who enjoy serenity and calmness far from madding crowds, hotels, markets of popular hill stations. The town of Darjeeling is visible from this place and an illuminated Darjeeling in the night makes an eye-catching view.

The view of Kanchenjunga turning red during sunrise is unforgettable. Watch the sun slowly come out and as soon as the crimson rays fell on the Kanchendzonga range, the magic begins.  For the next 30 minutes or so will be your turn to get mesmerized by the amazing beauty of the mighty Himalayas. Slowly the snow peaks turn from pink to orange to gold and then the whole range come out in its dazzling white attire. The Kanchendzonga, Kabru, Kumbhakarna all are tantalizingly close, looking ethereal against a clear blue sky. No matter how many times you have watched this spectacle, this always comes up with an unprecedented beauty.

Places of attractions around Lepchajagat

Darjeeling Town (22kms) is not very far from here. As a result a tourists staying at Lepchajagat can undertake all the sightseeing and other activities as someone staying in the main town.

Ghoom (12kms) away can be reached in about half an hour. One can visit Ghoom monastery and also go to Tiger hill from here.

Jorepokhri Salamandar Project (6 Kms) is very close to Lepchajagat. You can visit the lake which is home to Himalayan Salamandar, a rare species of Reptile.

Mirik is a picturesque tourist spot nestled in the serene hills of Darjeeling district in West Bengal, India. The name Mirik comes from the Lepcha words Mir-Yok meaning "place burnt by fire". Mirik (30 Kms) is about an hours drive.

Maneybhanjan (15 Kms.) on the Indo-Nepal boarder is the base for treks to Sandakphu and is about 45 minutes drive.

Best time to Visit Lepchajagat

Lepchajagat attains sub-zero temperature during winters and is not recommended for a tourist visit during this time of the year. During March, Lepchajagat has pleasant climate along with variety of newly blossomed rhododendrons and can be best visited by taking up holiday tours from Kolkata.

How to Reach Here

Lepchajagat is well connected with cities of Siliguri and Darjeeling by road. Tourists can come here after taking a train for Siliguri or a flight to Bagdogra. Beyond that, one can take a bus or a shared jeep to reach Ghoom from where a car can be booked for Lepchajagat. The car ride is an eight hour journey through rocks, snow and beautiful flora. A running jeep going to Mirik can also be hired to alternatively reach Lepchajagat.

Top Dooars Tourism Spots to Cover On a Vacation

Top Dooars Tourism Spots to Cover On a Vacation | Dooars Ecoviillege | Scoop.it

Dooars spreads on a large area, with parts of it reaching even to the North East and Bhutan.  It is not of a surprise that one cannot cover each and every place on a single vacation, and therefore, you need to plan well to make the most Dooars tourism wonders. Here are two places that you can choose to cover in a week.

1.    Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary: This place is more than 100kms from Siliguri and was developed in the year 1941 with an intention of protecting the wildlife of the region. It is home to the very famous Great Indian one-horned Rhinos apart from beautiful birds and animals like tigers, hog deer, Bengal florican. Some of the local flowers and trees of the region are also protected here, and for those in love with the tall elephant grass, they will love the beauty here.

What makes this place a sheer pleasure is the fact that one can actually be a part of the wild. You don’t need to be lucky to come across all kinds of deer and some seven and more varieties of turtles. For those who like to check on the jungles, they can even take a guided elephant riding experience here. There is a lot to be checked in the local culture, as well, because the Toto Tribe, one of the rare tribes, has its home very close to the sanctuary.

Apart from the monsoon season, which is between June and September, the sanctuary is open all throughout the year. March and April are the best months to come here, and you can come to Jaldapara via Siliguri. Trains that stop at Falakata Railway station can be also a good way to reach the sanctuary. You can find good Dooars hotels and resorts within the sanctuary to stay, or you can look for hotels in the nearest city.

2.    Gorumara National Park: In the same trip, you can also cover this park that was developed in 1976. Known for having a good count of Great Indian one-horned Rhinos, this place is protected and is a pleasure to check. You can find some of the best bisons, elephants and leopards here, apart from the winter birds that come after October. Murti and Raidak are two important rivers of the region.

If you plan to stay here, you can look for the beautiful Dooars hotels and private resorts that are located nearby in Lataguri. There are also government cottages to stay, as well.

At the first glance, it may seem that both the places are too far away from one another to be covered in the same trip, but a tourist operator can help you in planning the vacations right. You can choose to hire a car for the entire car for traveling, or else, local transportation choices are good enough. Make sure that you spend at least few nights in the jungle resorts to get the first hand feel of the wildlife of Dooars, which is rare.

This little picturesque Lepcha village lies is a valley crisscrossed by a rivulet (Khola) and guarded by lush green hills. Every house in Sitong has a garden and every garden has orange trees. The whole village turns orange during the winter. Visiting Sitong is like time travelling – there’s a bamboo bridge, a church, some winding village paths skirting through orange orchards and few meandering streams and a rivulet, which the locals love to call Riyang River. The church guesthouse has been renovated with modern facilities to accommodate guests.

Sitong is amongst the virgin tourist destinations located in Kurseong in the Indian state of West Bengal which is a storehouse of natural beauty. It contains the Lepcha village, which is a small village surrounded by some green mountains and rivulet or khola. You can also spend time walking all around the village along the farms or sit idle on the banks of Riyang river and watch the Lepcha kids returning home. In Sitong, you would love doing “nothing.”

Nearby attractions of Sitong: In the olden days, there was a century-old Bamboo Church in Sitong, which, however, presently has been demolished. The orange orchards are attractive enough to draw numerous visitors every year.
