I'm working with a customer right now that's got ambitions to change (more like extend) its business model around data. It's not quite 'Big Data' yet, but it may very well get there fast (since we're paving the road map by introducing data warehouse, search-oriented indexing, business intelligence, and cloud services/technologies fairly rapidly). Today most of the Big Data early adopters are big companies. I'm deliberately omitting social web start ups who, of course, need to think in Big Data terms from the get-go. Many small companies need guidance on how they can expand their data business models. They don't necessarily know how to and that nowadays they can leverage Big Data processing in the cloud cheaply and that the required skills are learnable and teachable. The majority of "small business" developers though still find this Cloud and Big Data stuff rather esoteric. They need to evolve or they'll fail miserably to remain relevant in this fast-changing industry. - Vin. Here’s what you should know. A McKinsey Quarterly Strategy article."

The great thing about big data is that there's still plenty of room for new blood, especially for companies that want to leave infrastructure in the rearview mirror.

Hadoop is so last decade don't you think? I mean Google and many Universities was using Map/Reduce 12 years ago. But all the big boys are on to it because Big Data in the Cloud is the next big thing. Bring on real time stream processing, I say. But you have to admit what gets adopted in the market is driven a lot by available tooling and platforms. And maybe real-time Big Data processing is still an esoteric edge case good for the financial transaction processing industry, surveillance, massive scale sensor nets and so on. For now batch Big Data processing is the winner in the Enterprise. -Vin “IBM has the deepest Hadoop platform and application portfolio.”
