I agree. I should know because I happen to be the CMO for a medium sized call center group in Manila and our business is booming. It's not just the cheaper prices for equivalent skills that brings people over here either. It's also the growing instability and unpredictability that's scaring people from sourcing various kinds of telemarketing services in the US. India is no longer dominant. In fact a large percentage of out clients tell us that their customers actually say they prefer the Filipino agents because (1) their English is much easier to understand and (2) they're not as arrogant. Even most of the large Indian BPO's have set up facilities here.
wanderingsalsero's comment, January 10, 2013 2:28 AM
This is actually fun. I read this article too....yep! Another NES (none-Native-English-Speaker). It's not readily obvious to people who don't work in the outsourced telemarketing (or BPO business) business writing like this shows the need to a top-quality quality control team 'behind' any outsourcing one might do.

There's nothing wrong with outsourcing telemarketing or anything else. It's simply another, more high-tech, form of delegating a task. But...outsourcing does entail a different quality control process as compared to having your team in the next room.

The problem companies get into with telemarketing outsourcing is that they don't realize that they still have to (1) manage their expectations and the work they're getting and (2) have excellent communications with their contact at the outsourcing service provider.

When clients don't do that....that's when little quality control issues creep in and often gradually downgrade the quality of the finished product and eventually the client leaves with a bad impression of offshore outsourced telemarketing. That's probaby one of the reasons why we've done pretty well with our customers....i.e. we've got Westerners at the executive level who've actually been over here in the Philipines for awhile and we keep our eye on the product coming 'off the line'.
wanderingsalsero's curator insight, January 10, 2013 2:47 AM

I'm Scooping this because not only is it basically accurate in the points it makes (regardless of the English profeciency of the writer) but it also shows how curation (a la Scoop.it) can be used to grow awareness and influence.

The secondary reason I'm scooping it is because it, once again, shows the prevelance of outsourced web-copy on the market.  If you read this article....you'll see indications that a NES (native English speaker) didn't write it.

If business would take the time to build a team of writers who understand the language very well and the particular niche (or style) they're writing in....they'd be able to crank out a lot of content that would help their web position a lot.  Companies just don't take the time to do it.

In the internet marketing business (one of my interests) you don't see many people integrating offshore outsourced telemarketing very effectively any more.

There was a time period when it was 'hot' in the industry but, because the people doing it didn't watch the quality of their agents, it got a bad rap as being 'ineffective'.

Actually however, if you're willing to pay a little more you can find Filipinos who speak excellent English and the ROI is still very high because you'll still pay a lot less here than you would for the same talent back in the US.

There's even a small but growing supply of native-English-speaking foreigners....like me!

Why the Leadership Industry Has Failed

Why the Leadership Industry Has Failed | Donna whispers to you, "Psssst! Want some free stuff?" | Scoop.it

Corporate training in the U.S. is a $70 billion market, and 35% of that is spent on management and leadership training. Over the last several decades, the industry has produced a recipe for how to be a successful corporate leader: Be trustworthy and authentic, serve others (particularly those who work for and with you), be modest, and exhibit empathetic understanding and emotional intelligence.

Steve Bax's curator insight, November 27, 2015 4:56 AM

Very stimulating article here.

My take-aways are:

"It’s far more important for leaders to understand what a particular situation requires and to act in an appropriate way, says Pfeffer. “Leaders need to be true to what the situation demands and what the people around them want and need,”

In the end, says Pfeffer, we would all be better off accepting that our leaders are generally not truthful, authentic, modest, or trustworthy, largely the opposite of the message we get from the popular motivational leadership stories we hear. “All those stories and the inspiration we get from them change nothing,” he says. “The fundamental problem with this industry is the disconnect between what we say we want from our leaders and how they actually manage organizations.”

Jeffrey Pfeffer is the Thomas D. Dee II Professor of Organizational Behavior at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. His new book, Leadership BS: Fixing Workplaces and Careers One Truth at a Time, was published by Harper Business. Has to be worth a read!

Interesting point of view.  What do you think.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, February 2, 2016 12:10 PM

We confuse management with leadership. Both are important, but they are different. We cannot summarize leadership into a recipe of 7 habits, 3 phases, 5 outcomes, etc. It is too non-linear and complex.

Very good article by Josh Bersin in HBR here. In addition to the comment from Kenneth Mikkelsen, I find the comment on the importance of culture very interesting.
Bersin says "As we’ve studied digital leadership over the last few years, we find something else important: Culture is key. Success is largely dependent on people sharing information with each other, partnering, and continuously educating themselves. This is able to happen when you build a collective, transparent, and deeply shared culture. CEOs who are digital leaders are continuously reinforcing the culture, communicating values, and aligning people around the culture whenever something goes wrong." The shift to more use and sharing of metrics is revealing too.

A great story of self has to be a real story of self. Finding that story may require a leader to reflect deeply on her past and motivations, and communicate them honestly — even those parts that are embarrassing or imperfect.
