Mark: I saw this in several places today and each time I went to the site I liked the quotes and the incredible graphic desing & photography just a little more each time. For me, truly inspirational work leaves me thinking to myself "Dammit! I shoulda done that..." Then I turn on the TV for emotional comfort. ~~ Kidding, sorta.

In an unusual arrangement with a commercial company, the universities hope that those who pass the free courses will pay tuition to complete a degree program.

Society for College and University Planning (SCUP)'s curator insight, January 23, 6:10 PM

It's here: A free intro course, for credit. And maybe you'll like the experience enough to select that school for more. And maybe the school learns more about you when you take the course.

“It’s a bold strategy on the part of the institutions,” said Michael Tanner, vice president for academic affairs at the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities. “In some sense, it’s a new recruitment strategy: give them a free sample, and maybe they’ll find they have an appetite for it. It’s hard to say how well it will work. The MOOC business will become crowded over time.”

Telemarketing New Financial Services – Ask For A Chance

Telemarketing New Financial Services – Ask For A Chance | Donna whispers to you, "Psssst! Want some free stuff?" | Scoop.it
Telemarketing can be one of the few methods cost-effective enough for young financial businesses. That is why you should do it right to get your chance.

Via ben bernard
Donna Bryan's insight:

Telemarking can be cost-effective for all businesses.

wanderingsalsero's comment, January 10, 1:47 AM
I agree. I should know because I happen to be the CMO for a medium sized call center group in Manila and our business is booming. It's not just the cheaper prices for equivalent skills that brings people over here either. It's also the growing instability and unpredictability that's scaring people from sourcing various kinds of telemarketing services in the US. India is no longer dominant. In fact a large percentage of out clients tell us that their customers actually say they prefer the Filipino agents because (1) their English is much easier to understand and (2) they're not as arrogant. Even most of the large Indian BPO's have set up facilities here.
wanderingsalsero's comment, January 10, 2:28 AM
This is actually fun. I read this article too....yep! Another NES (none-Native-English-Speaker). It's not readily obvious to people who don't work in the outsourced telemarketing (or BPO business) business writing like this shows the need to a top-quality quality control team 'behind' any outsourcing one might do.

There's nothing wrong with outsourcing telemarketing or anything else. It's simply another, more high-tech, form of delegating a task. But...outsourcing does entail a different quality control process as compared to having your team in the next room.

The problem companies get into with telemarketing outsourcing is that they don't realize that they still have to (1) manage their expectations and the work they're getting and (2) have excellent communications with their contact at the outsourcing service provider.

When clients don't do that....that's when little quality control issues creep in and often gradually downgrade the quality of the finished product and eventually the client leaves with a bad impression of offshore outsourced telemarketing. That's probaby one of the reasons why we've done pretty well with our customers....i.e. we've got Westerners at the executive level who've actually been over here in the Philipines for awhile and we keep our eye on the product coming 'off the line'.
wanderingsalsero's curator insight, January 10, 2:47 AM

I'm Scooping this because not only is it basically accurate in the points it makes (regardless of the English profeciency of the writer) but it also shows how curation (a la Scoop.it) can be used to grow awareness and influence.

The secondary reason I'm scooping it is because it, once again, shows the prevelance of outsourced web-copy on the market.  If you read this article....you'll see indications that a NES (native English speaker) didn't write it.

If business would take the time to build a team of writers who understand the language very well and the particular niche (or style) they're writing in....they'd be able to crank out a lot of content that would help their web position a lot.  Companies just don't take the time to do it.

In the internet marketing business (one of my interests) you don't see many people integrating offshore outsourced telemarketing very effectively any more.

There was a time period when it was 'hot' in the industry but, because the people doing it didn't watch the quality of their agents, it got a bad rap as being 'ineffective'.

Actually however, if you're willing to pay a little more you can find Filipinos who speak excellent English and the ROI is still very high because you'll still pay a lot less here than you would for the same talent back in the US.

There's even a small but growing supply of native-English-speaking foreigners....like me!

Given the extraordinary demands on higher education to adopt strategies that deliver better results with fewer resources and the common resistance of our institutions to strategic change, leaders and planners would do well to actively engage in processes of cultural change.

Management author and professor Peter Drucker is often quoted as saying that “culture eats strategy for lunch.” Given the extraordinary demands on higher education to adopt strategies that deliver better results with fewer resources and the common resistance of our institutions to strategic change, leaders and planners would do well to actively engage in processes of cultural change. This requires three things: a genuine understanding of the origins of institutional culture as expressed in the “deep architecture” of our colleges and universities; a systematic approach to initiating “courageous conversations” throughout the institution, leveraged by evidence that creates both hope and despair; and a willingness to reengineer the deep architecture around a new set of design principles, displacing the old culture with a new, intentional, emerging culture built on new working theories.

Do you have examples of where culture has eaten strategy for lunch?

The basis to blame leaded gasoline for rising (and now diminishing) crime rates around the world is quite compelling and well supported. Incredible. Time to sue Shell, Exxon and the rest, a few trillion at least :-)
