Ivy League Guru's curator insight, March 28, 2014 9:11 PM

imes have changed. No longer do college recruiters just look at your high school grades and college application. Today, they look at your online profile and behavior. Your tweets, Facebook pics, Instagram pictures, Youtube videos and blog comments now all play a part in your college application.

Lets ask DUKE what they think.  One of their  accepted students is doing porn to pay her way through school. Did they know that she was a porn star when she  applied?

“Colleges are a microcosm of American society,” Wade said. “It’s a story of hormone-driven kids packed into dorms like sardines. And what we see when we look there -- the glamorization of casual sex; the binge-drinking; the crude, insensitive humor; the homophobia; the racism -- is a story about us.”

Said Wade, the Occidental sociologist.

Take no chances -- Just clean it up -- depending on how bad you want that Ivy league acceptance!

Educators like to tweet! Out of the 1/2 billion tweets that post every day, 4.2 million are related to education, according to Brett Baker, an account executive at Twitter.com. Awaken Librarian's comment, September 20, 2016 9:29 AM
I absolutely support this initiative. Just like librarians are trying to debunk the "Marian, Librarian" stereotype of shushing prudes, tenure professors need to dust off their statuesque behavior and progress with the technological times. Too often I find that complacency is the rut of university staff. Keeping their nose to the ground on connecting their works with students can't do anything but enhance progress all the way around.

What happens when middle schoolers take to Twitter? They become learners

What happens when middle schoolers take to Twitter? They become learners | Social Media: Don't Hate the Hashtag | Scoop.it
Most research on the use of Twitter for learning has been conducted with undergraduate and graduate students. Research with teenagers, however, has found that students use social media for self-expression, communication, friendship maintenance and information.

So, recently, one of our partner teachers explored the potential of social media to promote learning. Ryan Becker, a teacher at a public middle school, wondered if Twitter might be an effective way to extend classroom learning and to link students to “real world” science.

Social Learning does NOT mean Social Media

Social Learning does NOT mean Social Media | Social Media: Don't Hate the Hashtag | Scoop.it

"Even though both social learning and social media witness a lot of human interaction, social media plays a very small role in social learning in the workplace. Instructional designers need, besides real face-to-face collaboration during the learning process, a digital watercooler around which employees gather, have high quality conversations and discuss about possible solutions to business problems."

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, April 16, 2016 5:08 PM
The 70 and 20% seem to point at communities of practice as being important for adults as they learn. Social media plays a small role. As well, even amongst adults, personal motivation is important. In that case, social media is likely only effective if the person is motivated to learn, has time to access the learning, and is capable of using the media being used. This is important for teachers who are often isolated from others, often working on their own, and little access to social media during the course of their daily work.

It's a no-brainer. Positive messages are nicer to read anyway! If you are going to talk about work on social media, talk it UP, not down!

Denis Lundie's curator insight, February 20, 2016 12:06 PM

A very relevant question. Educators are in an uncomfortable position between the right to express themselves as they like in a public (or private) forum and their social role as educators and 'role models'.

A lawyer rewrote Instagram’s terms of use ‘in plain English’ so kids would know their privacy rights

A lawyer rewrote Instagram’s terms of use ‘in plain English’ so kids would know their privacy rights | Social Media: Don't Hate the Hashtag | Scoop.it

Amy B. Wang writes: "It’s no secret that teenagers love social media.

Members of “Generation Z” can spend up to nine hours a day sharing photos on Instagram, consuming “content” on YouTube and talking to friends on Snapchat. (Just don’t ask them to get excited about Facebook.)

But how much do these teens understand what they’ve agreed to give up when they start an account with those sites?

Probably very little, according to a report released last week — and dense terms and conditions that are “impenetrable and largely ignored” are partly to blame."
