Sue Osborne's comment, June 17, 8:46 PM
My feeling is, if the relationship started at school and the students are in school together, the school (as well as students and parents) has a responsiblity to that student. Particularly if the images or scandal is being further distributed via the "schoolyard network" of peers. Once the students start sharing stuff with other students I think it becomes school and parent/home terrirtory. Because the kids are all so connected via social media the lines get blurred very quickly, which is why everyone needs to be aware and vigilant. Kids just don't seem to understand that split second decision to share someting inappropriate can ruin lives and reputations almost instantly.

This article made me smile! I swear I sharpened my HTML chops with my MySpace! My 4 MySpace pages were gorgeous!

Yes, I had at LEAST 4 different accounts - fictional characters , historic (Lily Langtry) and literary characters, I even had a Poison Ivy page! We had a great time communicating with each other- the literary characters -- and yes, it was my first blog! I had a GREAT rant on CSI Miami star David Caruso! LOL

Were you on MySpace? What do you miss?

We should share this with adults. I know teachers (I use the word loosely) who scream at their audience, attack dissenting voices, and do not check spelling and grammar because it is more important to be out there than be a good role model. The interesting thing is the teaches who do this do it face-to-face and digitally.

I agree to an extent, Sue. At some point, though, adults are also failing to pass along ideas of what is and isn't appropriate. Or in some situations they are sadly modeling the bad behavior themselves.

gwynethjones's insight:

Boring Title But FASCINATING Infographic!

Basically, those who Tweet should do so well & worthy. The world IS Watching. So are your future employers or your boss! Or like your principal or your superintendent.

You SHOULD share and share some more ideas, tips, lessons, successess of your students, community good news, & positive messages.

In your Tweets/Blog/FB/Instagram

Don't bash your students, your employer, your school or district, don't curse, dwell on negativity, and really - shouldn't have to say this but don't Tweet about drinking or partying  - In fact, for staff or teacher parties off site, maybe we should say "let's enjoy this party responsibly & "not record it"**  Or maybe we shouldn't be still going to parties that get that crazy that it's an issue? ;-) j/k

As in all things, educators should be like Caesar's wife - above suspicion or reproach.  -BUT that does NOT mean you can't be fun or have a personality! Just be professional.

Delete any late night Tweets!  Hey, I bet this would make a good blog post. Hmmmmm brekkie first!

**suggested by @theartguy after he thought my original idea of collecting all the cell phones & cameras was a wee bit controlling or draconian - whatevs!  LOL
