Telemedicine consults may reduce errors at rural ERs

Emergency rooms in rural areas don't see many very sick or badly injured children each year. When they do, bringing in a pediatric critical care specialist by videoconference to help with treatment could prevent errors, a new study suggests.

 

Researchers found rural ER doctors made errors in administering medication - such as giving the wrong dose or the wrong drug altogether - just 3 percent of the time when they used so-called telemedicine to connect with a specialist.

It's strange to wrap one's mind around the idea of human pee powered robots, but that's exactly what a group of UK researchers are attempting to create. Mimicking the human heart, their latest innovation is a heart pump with artificial muscles that aims to deliver human urine to their latest generation of Ecobots – a self-sustaining robot that runs on all manner of waste matter collected from its environment.

"An advantage of using urine is that it is easier to pump than a viscous fluid like, say, sewage sludge, which wouldn’t be suitable for our pump," Dr. Peter Walters, Research Fellow at UWE, tells Gizmag. "Also urine is a currently an untapped resource which is in plentiful supply – at present it is simply flushed down the drain when it could provide a source of energy."

Toilets have been toileting for hundreds of years without the slightest bit of disruption, minus the phasing out of the bidet. As such, the elimination industry is ripe for an app or gadget to make it more ergonomically friendly.

 

The Wellbeing Toilet, won a contest for potty design in the U.K. Could this be the thing that changes bowel movements forever?

 

Let’s review the facts: the toilet is “a hybrid,” rather than “a true squat toilet,” Fast Co. Exist reports:

 

“… you step up on the toilet, and as you bring your legs up, you lean into the correct angle. It’s similar to hybrids such as the Anglo-Indian toilet still used in India (and inside ancient Russian trains), which allow for both sitting and squatting, depending on preference.”

 

Mmkay. It also analyzes your pee, so it can tell you if you need to be checked for diabetes or kidney disease, nutritional defects or (shudder) pregnancy. Is this the apparatus that will take a dump on Big Toilet once and for all? Guess we’ll have to sit tight on that.

People living with cystic fibrosis, growth hormone deficiencies and acne were among the most likely to report using their smartphones to find health information in a new survey from Manhattan Research.

 

Based on phone and online surveys of more than 8,600 U.S. adults, the firm estimated that some 95 million Americans look for health information on their smartphones — 25 percent more than were doing so last year.

 

The firm found that adoption of mobile solutions varied among patient groups. These patient groups were the ones most likely to report using mobile health solutions:

Your activity tracker knows a lot about you and your daily habits, but how much do you know about your activity tracker?

 

Walk, run, jog, sit, sleep or dance all night and your tracker will dutifully record every move you make.  How does it do it? All trackers rely on the same basic core technology—an accelerometer, which measures acceleration, which is the intensity and direction of movement.

 

If we only moved in one direction, tracking activity would be pretty simple, but that’s not the case. We live in three-dimensions: We move forward and backward, left and right, and up-and down. (In tech talk, these three directions are referred to as X, Y and Z axis respectively.) Unlike old school pedometers that were designed to just track forward motion–that is, they counted steps and distance in a linear path—any modern tracker worth its salt captures data from all three axes simultaneously.

 

How can trackers tell what you’re doing? For example, that I’m standing and not walking, or riding a bicycle and not running?

Trackers differentiate between specific activities (like walking, running or cycling) by detecting patterns in the force in the three axes that they measure. For example, walking or running will produce a pulse in the Z-axis, or up and down motion. Software can interpret the frequency of pulses to distinguish between running (high frequency) and walking (low frequency). Similarly, cycling will produce a bigger bang on the X-axis (forward motion) and a mere whimper on the Z-axis (up and down). It’s not magic, it’s just math!

 

How does a tracker measure calories burned?

The human body is constantly expending calories just to stay alive. Breathing, thinking, sleeping and digesting your food all consume calories. Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the sum total of all the calories burned by your body just doing these fundamental tasks; it accounts for the vast majority of calories burned by your body.

 

Your tracker estimates your basal calories using a formula based on the Harris-Benedict equation, which includes your height, weight, gender and age. Your BMR is the number of calories you need to consume on a daily basis to maintain your weight. If you want to lose weight, you need to burn calories in excess of your BMR.  The calorie total that is recorded on your tracker is a calculation of the calories that you burn in addition to your BMR. In other words, it’s based on the tracker’s best calculation of how active you are beyond simply burning calories to run your body and perform the tasks of daily life.  


Can a tracker assess the quality of my sleep?

Many activity trackers also monitor sleep, as do several apps offered on smartphones.  At the moment, no home tracker or app can perform a sleep study that is equivalent to the polysomnogram, which is conducted at a sleep center. The polysomnogram gauges brain activity, eye movement heart rhythm and muscle movements to determine sleep quality. It can be hard on the patient, who while trying to get a good night’s sleep, is required to wear a breathing mask in addition to being tethered to a bunch of wires. Despite its obvious shortcomings—the very nature of the test itself can make sleeping somewhat challenging—it is still the gold standard for assessing sleep disorders.

Des chercheurs de l’Université de Manchester ont développé un nouveau système de moquette intelligente et connectée : Smart Carpet.

Dotée de fibres optiques sous sa surface, cette moquette intelligente crée une représentation visuelle en 2 dimensions des mouvements détectés, en se basant sur la pression mesurée par les capteurs lorsque quelqu’un se déplace.

Cette moquette intelligente est capable d’enregistrer de nombreux scénarios, dont chaque mouvement détecté par les capteurs est renvoyé à un ordinateur.

L’ordinateur, ou poste de contrôle, est alors en mesure d’analyser des scénarios : il sait détecter les mouvements de pas habituels, mais est également capable d’envoyer un signal d’alarme sonore dans la maison lorsqu’il détecte un mouvement anormal tel qu’un trébuchement ou une chute.

Mieux encore, à la manière d’un système de sécurité, le système peut envoyer une demande d’aide à par téléphone si la personne tombée ne se relève pas immédiatement.

Human interaction with robots is about to get a little more personal. Meet 'Furhat', the face of tomorrow's interactive technology.

 

An increasingly important – and sometimes frustrating – part of daily life is dealing with so-called “user interfaces”. Whether it’s a smartphone or an airport check-in system, the user’s ability to get what they want out of the machine relies on their own adaptability to unfamiliar interfaces.

 

But what if you could simply talk to a machine the way you talk to a human being? And what if the machine could also ask you questions, or even address two different people at once?

 

These kinds of interactive abilities are being developed at KTH Royal Institute of Technology with the help of an award-winning robotic head that takes its name from the fur hat it wears.

With a computer-generated, animated face that is rear-projected on a 3D mask, Furhat is actually a platform for testing various interactive technologies, such as speech synthesis, speech recognition and eye-tracking. The robot can conduct conversations with multiple people, turning its head and looking each person straight in the eye, while moving its animated lips in synch with its words.

Furhat’s ability to turn its face to multiple people in a conversation is enabled by face-tracking software. But its ability to make eye contact is achieved through projection.


Unlike a 2D image, which can appear to be looking at everybody in the room at once – a phenomenon known as the “Mona Lisa effect” – Furhat appears to shift its gaze because the face is projected onto 3D-printed model of a human face.“When we first experimented with this, the effect was strong immediately,” Al Moubayed says. “You could bond with, or relate to, the face.“It is an avatar that can really be present in the physical environment.”


Such technologies are being explored as a potential therapeutic tool for children with autism and other disorders that affect social interaction, he says. The technology can also be used for telepresence applications in which 3D replicas of people’s faces become the screens that we look at when conducting a video conference call.

Around 70 percent of patients and 80 percent of health professionals in Spain would be willing to use telemedicine if it were available to them, according to a study conducted by Telefonica and 
IESE Business School.

 

Telemedicine or Remote Patient Management (RPM) is a system that allows patients to monitor their health from home and share the results in real time with their doctors. The study is the first of its kind in Spain and reflects the views of nearly 1,800 people, including chronic patients (hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and medical professionals across Spain (general practitioners, specialists and nurses) in both the public and private sectors.

 

Currently, only 31 percent of doctors know exactly what RPM is, but nearly nine out of 10 professionals feel that RPM can improve the quality of care thanks to early detection of changes in patient conditions and reduction of crowding at hospitals. However, the lack of patient access to technology and lack of technological training is a major concern for 80 percent of health professionals, as is the reduction in personal contact with patients.

 

This lack of contact with physicians is also the main concern of patients, although most would be comfortable using videoconferencing. On average, only 16 percent of patients surveyed said they would refuse to use the system if it were offered.
