Marian Locksley's curator insight, April 24, 5:19 AM

A juvenile humpback whale that had become stranded in shallow water in La Paz Bay was rescued Sunday by authorities and citizens who used a rope and boats to pull the cetacean into deeper water.

According to Octavo Dia, the rescue effort lasted two-plus hours and the whale seemed to swim freely away despite the long and very dramatic ordeal.

(The accompanying Cabovision video shows part of the rescue effort, including the whale being pulled from the shoal. It does not show the whale swimming to freedom.)

"The effort followed the protocol for marine mammal rescue," Octavo Dia reported. "The struggle to save the whale lasted over two hours, but the successful results incited elated uproar in the concerned witnesses."

The whale had become stranded beyond El Coromuel Beach during low tide. El Coromuel is north of La Paz, which is the capital of Baja California Sur. Among those assisting in the rescue effort were members of a local stranding network.

A #dolphin

Marian Locksley's curator insight, March 20, 4:30 AM

While heading out on a fishing trip yesterday morning along the Gold Coast, Burt and a friend ran across a beached dolphin. Lying 150 feet from the water line, the stranded animal appeared to have been trapped by the quickly receding tide and was now clinging to life in the sand.

"We thought he was dead to start with," says Burt. "But when he saw us it was like, 'The rescuers (are) coming to get me'. He was excited."

Marian Locksley's curator insight, January 30, 3:11 AM

We’re talking about a staggering and unprecedented amount of harm to more than 40 species of marine mammals that should give any federal agency involved, be it the Navy or the National Marine Fisheries Service, pause,” said Zak Smith, attorney with NRDC’s marine mammal project. “NMFS has been charged by Congress to protect these mammals, not sanction their deaths.  Giving the Navy the green light to harm marine mammals 31 million times is completely counter to NMFS mission and common sense.”
