The Northern Edge Project. | Stories and photography from the project

marcpauze's insight:

The arctic. A land of mysteries that sparks our imagination with imageries of Inuit riding over the ice with their dog sled, living in igloos, hunting and fishing to survive. But this world is changing. It has already changed. On the “Northern Edge” Project, I will travel on the territory, to meet the Inuit and document changes related to global warming, modernization and living in a global and connected world.

Cédric Gerbehaye – On the Cerro Rico | LFI Blog | Explore & document the World | Scoop.it
How do you photograph the origins of capitalism? Cédric Gerbehaye traveled to the Bolivian Andes to explore this question. Here he found a disconcerting example of how the economic system that enriches the industrialised world is facilitated by people who will never benefit from it themselves.
marcpauze's insight:
The black and white photographs of Gerbehaye are strong and charged with sensitivity. They do exactly what they are supposed to do; tell the story. Wonderful report! Magnifique reportage!

"When you lose your land, you lose your identity," says Magnum photographer Larry Towell
marcpauze's insight:
The subject is serious. Enough for a big name of photojournalism to go there. For nearly 20 years, the legendary Afghan resistant Massoud led his people, first against the Russians, and later against the Taliban, in order to liberate his country. Fifteen years after his assassination on September 9, 2001, this is my tribute to a man of rare intelligence and profound sensibility.

Workers, including children, labor in harsh and dangerous conditions to meet the world’s soaring demand for cobalt, a mineral essential to powering electric vehicles, laptops, and smartphones, according to an investigation by The Washington Post.
marcpauze's insight:

Another Day Of Life: A Unique Animated Perspective On The Angolan Conflict

Another Day Of Life: A Unique Animated Perspective On The Angolan Conflict | Explore & document the World | Scoop.it
A look at the upcoming animated film, and the Kapuściński book that was its inspiration.
marcpauze's insight:

"As I see it, it’s wrong to write about people without living through at least a little of what they are living through"

– Ryszard Kapuściński, Another Day of Life.

Set during the three months Kapuściński spent in the country in 1975, Another Day of Life follows a reporter seeking the truth about the war, who during a dangerous journey through Angola encounters situations and events that force him to change his attitude towards his work and his life. On his expedition, the reporter realizes that he must become more than an observer to understand the real meaning of the things he witnesses.

Animation comprises 60 minutes of the film, playing a double function: firstly, to recount historical events while conveying the surreal realities of the war in Angola. Additionally, the broad creative potential of animation allows the filmmakers to shift between the real world and an imaginary one, keeping viewers in suspense and unsure what they’re seeing is real or inside the journalist’s mind. The film is supplemented with live documentary footage, filling in the missing pieces of the puzzle.
