Alternate History: Robert Capa on D-Day (7) « Photocritic International

Alternate History: Robert Capa on D-Day (7) « Photocritic International | Documentary photography | Scoop.it

For 70 years, John Morris, former London Picture Editor ofLIFE magazine, has worked tirelessly at the self-assigned task of persuading the world that on June 7, 1944, in the darkroom of LIFE‘s London office, the brief shutting of the doors of a heated makeshift film-drying cabinet by one Dennis Banks, an overzealous teenage la bassistant, destroyed all but eleven frames of Robert Capa’s D-Day films from Omaha Beach.

Marc-André Pauzé's insight:

Following the use of a far from authentic image by TIME in a film on the famous photos of Robert Capa during D-Day, an expert fire at the "myth" of Capa as THE war photographer. The story of pictures lost to melting would be a lie concocted by Morris, LIFE Magazine and later by Capa himself, as reported by E.D. Coleman

Trafficked into slavery on Thai trawlers to catch food for prawns | Documentary photography | Scoop.it
The Thai fishing industry is built on slavery, with men often beaten, tortured and sometimes killed - all to catch 'trash fish' to feed the cheap farmed prawns sold in the west

Workers - Sebastiao Salgado

Workers - Sebastiao Salgado | Documentary photography | Scoop.it

In 1986 Sebastião Salgado began a series of reportages on the theme of manual labor, throughout the different continents. This work was conceived to tell the story of an era. The images offer a visual archaeology of a time that history knows as the Industrial Revolution, a time when men and women work with their hands provided the central axis of the world.

Marc-André Pauzé's insight:

To celebrate May 1st, let's revisit "Workers" by Sebastiao Salgado

Mario Pires's curator insight, April 7, 5:38 AM

Sometimes I find myself thinking, ‘I don’t want to take this picture.’ It’s the sound of your moral and ethical being, which is ever changing. I love what I do, or at least can’t imagine doing anything else. But these days, every time I get all my equipment together to go, I wonder if it will be the last.” - Paolo Pellegrin

Jon C's curator insight, April 10, 10:06 PM

This does give that feel of a Dutch  artwork, where all the figures have been carefully place - except it is a photo of a meeting of war lord types in Afghanistan. Photojournalism is a complex art.

Best of 2013

Best of 2013 | Documentary photography | Scoop.it

Help me find my best picture of the year and run the chance of winning an art print.

Geopolitics, Inuit culture, exploration, landscape, travel. Here are my finest photos of the year. A photographer is often not the best editor of his own material. I chose some because they have been difficult to do in an intense environment and they tell the story well. Others asked me relational work and patience or madness (like going to sleep alone in the tundra, without weapons). In any case, here they are. Finally, it is my selection.

What do you think? And what is THE best?

One hundred years of Leica cameras

One hundred years of Leica cameras | Documentary photography | Scoop.it
Photojournalist Tom Stoddart talks about photographing with a Leica camera as the company celebrates its centenary.
