Observing the Future of Storytelling at the New Frontier Story Lab | Sundance Institute | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

"As Sundance Institute invests in the advancement of story by supporting artists in the New Frontier program, we realized we should also create space for “the observer,” a critical role in innovation. The observer helps to contextualize new things, create language, identify what’s not working, and amplify what resonates.

(...) Samah’s impressive and beautiful video essay affirms the fundamental realities of story that every innovator should embrace."

mirmilla's insight:

What is creativity at the time of the new narrative tools?            A (sweet) video essay.

TYPE:RIDER Video Game, Documentary and Transmedia | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

“Our idea was to create a ‘gamedocumentary,’ ”   the project’s creative director, Théo Le Du, explains. A game containing documentary features in the gameplay, which can be accessed in the game and in the instruction guides (one for each level).

(...) True to its editorial policy, ARTE has been interested in the atypical side of games and their links to documentary formats. “ARTE paid special attention to the documentary content, but as soon as we added too much, they were like, ‘Stop, we want a game!" says Théo.

3WDOC is over!

3WDOC is over! | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

"Hello there,

In September 2010, we realized the first web documentary made in HTML5. In June 2012, we have launched the 3WDOC SaaS and blog in three languages dedicated to Digital Storytelling. Unfortunately, lack of adequate resources, we preferred to stop the exploitation of the 3WDOC"

thanks to @zbutcher

mirmilla's insight:

With a short farewell message, 3WDOC closes down - In contrast with the (apparent?) proliferation of interactive documentary.

Isolated event or the anticipation of a more generalized crisis coming?

A few months ago, as you can remember, Storyplanet too vanished into thin air , though in that case the founder declared that he did it to resolve a legal dispute with his former freelance developers.

The question then arises whether it is still possible to think of "universal" platforms  at the service of interactive projects, when more and more often the platform is the story itself.

TMC Resource Kit: CBC's Kidnapped - a Second Screen Case Study

"About the project:

This ground-breaking, multi-platform documentary examines the violent kidnapping of a Vancouver university student in 2006, and the massive police investigation that followed.

Fulscrn worked with producers at CBCNews.ca and CBC Television’s the fifth estate to create an innovative interactive experience that let users play the role of investigator, gathering clues, pursuing suspects, and ultimately trying to save the victim in this real-life crime.

On television viewers of the fifth estate scanned QR codes flashed on screen, or logged into Twitter and Facebook to weigh in on the investigation. This real-time experience was broadcast live in each of Canada’s five time zones with unique audience results.

A detailed gamification and multi-platform production strategy guided the development of Kidnapped, while dramatic recreations, stunning original footage, and beautiful interface design brought the interactive experience to life."

"Chaque forme artistique a connu des innovations de fond ou de forme plaçant le temps au coeur de la création. Le roman joue avec le temps du récit, l’anticipation, l’uchronie… Le cinéma et la télévision exploitent le flash back ou forward, le récit en temps réel avec la série 24, le récit simultané de plusieurs histoires comme dans le film Timecode…

Et bien entendu les nouvelles écritures ne sont pas en reste. J’ai donc voulu tenter d’établir une petite typologie, probablement loin d’être exhaustive."

50 narrative devices for non-fiction storytellers | Hot Pursuit Press

""Storytelling is like sex" wrote David Mamet, "everyone can do it, some of us are better at it than others."

After three years of studying non-fiction storytelling, and publishing a book and a magazine on the subject, in October 2013 I tweeted 50 things I've learned about storytelling, with the hashtag #story50.  All fifty tips have been compiled and extended into this presentation."

Using the similarity with sex may be a little alluring, but it expresses well the distinction between technique and art.
