The interactive documentary: A transformative art form

The interactive documentary: A transformative art form | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

"Documentary filmmaking has always been at its most dynamic at the intersection of technological changes, which allows for significant new modes of creation, periods of intense and rapid social transformation, the emergence of artists who seize on new means of expression to respond to social change, a direct and ongoing connection with audience/public and the ability to create social meaning.

We are at such a moment now."

The Age of Sensual Media Keynote

The Age of Sensual Media Keynote | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

"When FoST Founder, Charlie Melcher, was escorted onto a 1950's Hollywood movie set by a leopard-clad enchantress, the joys of being alive were in full force. Though the fictional plot was constructed by Punchdrunk as part of their most recent production, The Drowned Man, the visceral effect was beyond bona fide for Melcher. This transformative journey from passive audience member to lead protagonist was a reminder that our bodies are the most remarkable mediums for experiencing the world and the stories around us"

"formal and aesthetic qualities are no doubt facilitated through technology. “The sheer huge shift that has taken place in technology and access in the last 15—maybe 20—years,” said critic Geoff Pevere, “has led to an increase in the number of documentaries, and style and narrative innovation."

Webséries, webdocs: télé low cost ou nouveau genre audiovisuel ?

Webséries, webdocs: télé low cost ou nouveau genre audiovisuel ? | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

A Short History of Interactivity

A Short History of Interactivity | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it
This is no (r)evolution

"Each day there are more of us interactive storytellers. Because we enjoy the freedom of creating with fewer boundaries, because we could not take another “lean-back” century or because it is just that thing to explore right now. But it would be a great loss to engage in the craft of telling interactive stories without knowing where we come from. So there is, a bit of background "

WiREDMŌV: is this the future of interactive documentary? | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

"Although interactive documentaries are slowly gaining more recognition, their reach is often limited to academic circles, interactive documentary makers, or small communities already engaged with the field.

Michael Blackledge is looking to change that with his new project WiREDMŌV; a platform that is intended to educate the public about interactive documentary and assist interactive documentary makers with distribution.

Sandra Gaudenzi spoke to him about his inspirations, the difficulties facing the project and his hopes for the future:"

Ingrid Kopp: A Field Guide to Interactive Storytelling - i-Docs

Ingrid Kopp: A Field Guide to Interactive Storytelling - i-Docs | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it
Now with a lot of these interactive projects you really have to think about that. You are having to think about things like user experience design. A really interesting designer called Jason Brush, who is also a filmmaker, said, which really stopped me in my tracks, “If you think about editing as sculpting with time, you are sculpting with time. Your film is always that shape, it is 16:9 maybe 4:3, it is an aspect ratio. Within that, you are sculpting with the time to create your film. Now what you are doing with interactive projects is you are sculpting with both time and space, and you are shaping for use.”
