Sunny Side of the Doc: the founder Yves Jeanneau reflects on 25 years of the festival

Sunny Side of the Doc: the founder Yves Jeanneau reflects on 25 years of the festival | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it
Ahead of the 25th anniversary of Sunny Side of the Doc, which kicks off on Monday, founder Yves Jeanneau (pictured) tells realscreen about the evolution of both the event and the doc industry itself over the last quarter-century.

"The multi-platform Sunny Lab is now more upfront and integrated into the main market. For five years, we’ve been introducing new media /transmedia/interactive projects and new digital platforms. The pioneers came to share their experiences, expertise and research. Today we’re no longer at that stage. This area will be the second phase of SSD, concentrating on all the new ways of writing, producing and distributing. I call them clever content formats."

mirmilla's insight:

"Clever content formats"... Perhaps this definition may trigger a strong polemic with those who work in fiction, but in any case it expresses quite good the sense of how difficult it is to represent in words the change of the documentary genre.

The New Digital Storytelling Series: an interview with Vivek Bald | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

"I see the relationship of director and creative technologist(s) as roughly analogous to director and cinematographer, in the broad sense that the better a director knows what each of her or his crew members does (and can do), the better the director can communicate, the better the director can conceptualize what is and isn’t possible in a given situation, and the more creative the director can be. " Filmmaker Magazine

Documentary practice and basic knowledge of web production such as HTML coding, interface design, IA ...two key ingredients for Vivek Bald, the author of "Bengali Harlem" project

"With the issue of individual privacy a hot-button topic (and the all-consuming profiling of the advertising industry so prevalent now we just consider it the norm), Moskowitz wonders if social issue storytellers should embrace the techniques the "watchers" have established to empower advocates and create an intimate bond between storyteller and the audience."

The Form - As feature film loses its dominant position, what will follow?

"If we are going to reinvent the film industry in this new series, then the first piece to figure out is whether film is the form that the industry will continue to be built around in the coming decades. Other contenders range from super-short mobile pieces to never-ending television series to interactive games to experiential events that blend video and live performance. So this session will look at what new form or forms will  most likely flourish in the near future. What are the ones that we might reorganize the current film industry or motion picture industries around?"

Participants:

Tiffany Shlain , filmmaker and founder of The Webby Awards, in the first roundtable of the series to Reinvent Hollywood, in partnership with Fandor
Lance Weiler , Writer, director, experience designer
Karim Ahmad , Senior Digital Content Strategist at ITVS

The Quipu Project: a framework for participatory interactive documentary

The Quipu Project: a framework for participatory interactive documentary | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it
"The interactive documentary focuses on the case of forced sterilisation in Peru, which affected indigenous communities in isolated parts of the country. These factors were taken into consideration when developing the project. Unlike some other interactive documentaries, which focus on high end websites, the first audience of this project was the connected community. They wanted to tell the story with them, not about them."
