A fresh look at entertainment / storytelling by Paula Zuccotti

"Experienced in creating product briefs for the design world, Paula Zuccotti, founding director of The Overworld, placed people and their behaviours at the centre of her Conference presentation Consumption of Culture: People’s Needs, Desires and Expectations at this year’s Cross-Media Forum.

Paula’s unique way of making sense of what’s happening around us, by uncovering consumer needs and desires, takes the audience on a journey to provide a new angle on how we may view the future of culture consumption. Hear what Paula had to say in the video below."

Locative Media and transmedia storytelling

"Locative media that is of most immediate concerns is that made by those who create experiences that take into account the geographic locale of interest, typically by elevating that geographic locale beyond its instrumentalized status as a ‘latitude longitude coordinated point on earth’ to the level of existential, inhabited, experienced and lived place.

(...)  in using locative technologies, users can expand how they communicate and assert themselves in their environment and, in doing so, explore this continuum of urban interactions. Furthermore, users can assume a more active role in constructing the environments they are situated in."

L’espoir subsiste, donc."

Transmedia Journalism Principles

Transmedia Journalism Principles | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

"Looking at journalism in terms of Henry Jenkins’ seven principles, all of the characteristics of transmedia as he defines it have individually been implemented in a journalism or documentary context before.

Though they may not yet have been designed together in a single storyline, all the pieces of the puzzle are there already.

Nothing new must be invented to apply transmedia storytelling in journalism. "

Documentary and new digital platforms

"This study from the Documentary Network provides a portrait of an ecosystem in transformation.
We have tried to give a snapshot of the creation, production, and distribution of documentaries in a rapidly-changing digital environment. An analysis of the situation is an opportunity to think about the future, with enthusiasm and caution at the same time.

(...) The main objectives underlying this new study are:

• To identify the most innovative ways to integrate digital platforms into the phases of development, direction, promotion, and distribution of documentaries.
• To identify new forms of writing and innovative means of financing, new models of distribution and marketing on digital platforms.
• To try to measure in each of the above cases the potential and limitations of these new models.

Our intention is to support the creators, producers, and distributors of Canadian documentary who are faced with new challenges"

Transmedia adj. - end of the debate, phew :) I GIVE UP! Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying & Love Transmedia | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

Gary Hayes's curator insight, November 12, 2013 4:24 PM

Quote " This was followed by a discussion of how ‘transmedia’ can be used as an adjective instead of a noun, which isnot a new idea, but in this context suddenly felt less like a theoretical point, and more like the Truth.

This solved many problems. For example, a phrase like “transmedia performance art” which used to make me throw up a little, suddenly seemed perfectly in tune with the Universe. If you’re trying to create a definition of “transmedia” that refers to a thing with specific attributes then “transmedia performance art” will cause a major case of cognitive dissonance. However, if the word itself is defined as an attribute, suddenly your marbles all find their way home."

How Do We Measure the Impact of Documentaries? Data from the Puma Impact Award Nominees

How Do We Measure the Impact of Documentaries? Data from the Puma Impact Award Nominees | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it
In the world of social issue filmmaking, great work is being done in linking films to real-world issues that need attention.

"But at the same time, more and more pressure is being placed on filmmakers to prove that their film is making real-world impact.

The jurors for this year's Puma Impact Award -- Susan Sarandon, Ricken Patel, Gael Garcia Bernal, Zadie Smith, and Eric Schlosser --  have the unenviable task of choosing a winner for a 50,000 Euro reward in honor of the outreach campaigning done by the filmmakers behind one of this year's five nominated films.

Indiewire received exclusive access to more information on the winner's outreach, and we're reporting back on the impact campaigns from each one of the 5 films that were nominated for this year's Puma Impact Award.

(...) Comparing the five films, you can see that social media activity interacts with real-world actions in interesting ways.  It's not the be all end all of social impact, but it does prove that you're engaging people in a certain way. "

Top 5 of our Favorite Things: Participatory Documentaries | Submarine Channel

Top 5 of our Favorite Things: Participatory Documentaries | Submarine Channel | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

Technology is changing how we tell stories on many levels, but perhaps most importantly it’s the role audiences now get to play in guiding the narrative. Take participatory documentaries, which have emerged as a way to share stories about communities by including the voices of people in the community itself – both in the making and distribution of the content.

Naturally, projects that deal with people impacted by a situation — from economical and geographical to social and political — gravitate to this type of format. The storytelling process becomes both inclusive and collaborative, where the end result is a co-creation between documentary makers and the community at large. Here’s our Top 5 pick of participatory documentaries, some of which are never ending stories that change every day and couldn’t exist without people’s participation, whether local or global.

The distinction between linear and interactive documentaries, Part 2 | Open Doc Lab at MIT

The distinction between linear and interactive documentaries, Part 2 | Open Doc Lab at MIT | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

Physical Involvement and Organic Entities

excerpt:

[the] physical response demanded of the interactor is realized by means of the elements which the interactive documentary proposes: the modalities of navigation and interaction. Bill Nichols’ methods of representation were relevant in the case of linear documentaries, but in the present case – the analysis of interactive documentaries – the key components are navigation and interaction.

This perspective redirects attention from the documentary as a finished product, which can be analyzed through styles and conventions (camera position, the use of voice in off, the style of editing, the political role, etc..) to the study of the documentary as a dynamic form, as a system composed of its relations with different realities (people who have been interviewed, the mediation of the camera, the inner thoughts of the author, user participation, the cultural and economic context , etc.).
