Interactivity makes storytelling natural – again

excerpt:

"It all depends on my audience, of course. They are not sitting there in the flickering dark listening quietly like in a movie theater. They interact with me and have a habbit of interrupting my story with a comment or two – and usually a funny one. It breaks up my rhythm, and I have to be aware of what they are saying in order to continue my story. I need to use it to keep my momentum."

Why The Form Of Cinema Will Change

Why The Form Of Cinema Will Change | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it
Why does the feature film form have to change? What can society gain from this change? I thought I knew the answers, but what I discovered leading the conversation on ReInvent Hollywood's episode on "The Form" is something even more inspiring and exciting.I was 20 when I knew I wanted to use my life and…

Interrogating audiences: What do we mean by engagement and evaluation? - i-Docs

Interrogating audiences: What do we mean by engagement and evaluation? - i-Docs | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

"(...) this is a must see/read/hear presentation for those on both the industry and academic sides of the interactive documentary field." Jess Linington - i-Docs

"Engagement is becoming a ubiquitous term – but its rarely defined or interrogated and there’s little consensus about what it means. So what does this mean for idocs? Firstly it highlights the importance of being able to demonstrate not only that there is an audience, but that the audience is engaged. In doing this it matters a lot that we can articulate and defend a measure of idoc engagement that takes into account what is unique about the idoc audience." Kate Nash

"The interactive documentary focuses on the case of forced sterilisation in Peru, which affected indigenous communities in isolated parts of the country. These factors were taken into consideration when developing the project. They wanted to tell the story with them, not about them."

i-Docs's curator insight, July 3, 6:23 AM

'Hollow' is an interactive documentary that merges cinematic techniques with web-based storytelling to encourage a dialogue about the issues that small-town America faces. The project examines the lives of 30 individuals living in McDowell County, W.Va., an area that is representative of many boom-and-bust areas across the country. McDowell County has lost almost 80 percent of its population since 1950 and continues to lose more young people every year due to a lack of economic opportunity. This rural brain drain has left many counties across the nation with an aging demographic and failing infrastructure. However, many people—approximately 22,000—continue to live and work in McDowell. They feel a great sense of pride and belonging and believe they are there to help improve and move the county into the future.

Sunny Side of the Doc: the founder Yves Jeanneau reflects on 25 years of the festival

Sunny Side of the Doc: the founder Yves Jeanneau reflects on 25 years of the festival | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it
Ahead of the 25th anniversary of Sunny Side of the Doc, which kicks off on Monday, founder Yves Jeanneau (pictured) tells realscreen about the evolution of both the event and the doc industry itself over the last quarter-century.

"The multi-platform Sunny Lab is now more upfront and integrated into the main market. For five years, we’ve been introducing new media /transmedia/interactive projects and new digital platforms. The pioneers came to share their experiences, expertise and research. Today we’re no longer at that stage. This area will be the second phase of SSD, concentrating on all the new ways of writing, producing and distributing. I call them clever content formats."

mirmilla's insight:

"Clever content formats"... Perhaps this definition may trigger a strong polemic with those who work in fiction, but in any case it expresses quite good the sense of how difficult it is to represent in words the change of the documentary genre.

The New Digital Storytelling Series: an interview with Vivek Bald | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

"I see the relationship of director and creative technologist(s) as roughly analogous to director and cinematographer, in the broad sense that the better a director knows what each of her or his crew members does (and can do), the better the director can communicate, the better the director can conceptualize what is and isn’t possible in a given situation, and the more creative the director can be.
