A masterclass in documentary ethics from Gordon Quinn

A masterclass in documentary ethics from Gordon Quinn | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

"How transparency has always been integral to Kartemquin's work.

How "the truth of the work depends on the integrity of the maker," and not from any specific stylistic or technical choice, such as "Cinéma vérité" filming.

Why we always show our work to the subjects of the film before they are finished, explained via a key moment in The New Americans when we acquiesced to a subject's request not to include something they said in the film.

How documentary ethics differ from journalistic ethics.

How the ethics of the documentary maker/subject relationship have been affected by the evolution of filmmaking technology.

Interactive documentary – what does it mean and why does it matter?

Interactive documentary – what does it mean and why does it matter? | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it
Having just convened our fourth i-Docs symposium, it feels like an opportune moment to reflect on what is meant by ‘interactive documentary’ and why we at i-Docs have always seen it as a way of framing a set of possibilities, as opposed to being a specific medium, genre or platform. This seems prescient in light of the ‘immersive turn’ with interactive work starting to become more closely defined in response to it. At the heart of this is the current interest in emergent VR technology, a more specific medium or platform, within which more easily definable genres are likely to emerge. This is contributing to a rising interest in ‘experiential storytelling’ and ‘alternate realities’ and a potential re-framing of what is meant by interactivity.

How to Scale up ‘Interactive Documentary’ in Digital Newsrooms

How to Scale up ‘Interactive Documentary’ in Digital Newsrooms | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it
Interactive documentaries are fundamentally about increasing participation and engagement with journalism–what media scholar James Carey called the “ritual” component of communications. It’s a skill set and a mindset that Uricchio said is often given short shrift in traditional newsrooms.

This skills gap has hampered the growth of interactive documentary, but Uricchio says there are signs of that changing.

Snapchat live stories - Variety PMC

Snapchat live stories - Variety PMC | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it
when Snapchat shows you a similar image and the footage is grainy, herky jerky, and shot by someone sitting in the nosebleed seats behind home plate, that’s OK, because it’s trying to convey the perspective of the person watching the home run — not the home run itself. Rather than providing a “SportsCenter” highlight, Snapchat is staking a middle ground that delivers the vibrancy of a sense memory from someone in attendance.

An Interview with The Godmother of VR

An Interview with The Godmother of VR | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

"Journalism is another industry where VR can have a real impact; where people like journalist and documentary filmmaker Nonny de la Pēna are making it an exercise in empathy. Also referred to as ‘the godmother of virtual reality’, De la Pēna calls her work ‘immersive journalism’ through which you become a bystander to real life events recreated most potently due to actual sound recordings that lead the visuals."

Nick Fraser: ‘Documentaries transform reality, and are transformed by it’ | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it
To anyone contemplating a life in docs, I’d tend to ask two questions. First, do you mind if you’re poor and insecure? Second, do you want to be exposed to the worst as well as the best in humanity? Answer no and then yes, and hey presto – you’ll find yourself bent over a camera at all hours, or glaring hopelessly at hundreds of hours of footage. You won’t be rich, but you’ll have a good life.

We should be talking about torture in VR

We should be talking about torture in VR | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it
The reason science believes that VR has such a powerful impact on the mind is because of its sensorimotor capabilities. Unlike watching TV or reading a graphic novel, when you turn your head while viewing an application inside VR goggles, the image you see moves in correspondence to that. To put it simply, this confuses the signals inside your head. “One of the most intriguing things about removing the [television] frame is that on a subliminal level there is a deep part of your brain that says ‘I’m here,’” said the computer graphics pioneer Ken Perlin. The result is a strong sense of spatial presence which is great for playing an immersive game, but in the wrong hands could be manipulated to do harm.

“My name is Sidra”: how virtual reality could combat compassion fatigue

“My name is Sidra”: how virtual reality could combat compassion fatigue | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it
Perhaps the best way to think about it is to imagine media as a spectrum, where at one end is a static line drawing and at the other is real experience. We’re more likely to relate to media products on the latter end of the spectrum, such as live-action films, especially in 3D.
