The Listen Tree Project

The Listen Tree Project | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it
Our intervention is motivated by a need for forms of display that fade into the background, inviting attention rather than requiring it. We consume most our of our digital information through devices that often alienate us from our immediate surroundings; ListenTree points to a future where digital information might become enmeshed in material.

Interactive, purposeful storytelling meets Virtual Reality at Learn Do Share London with ‘Meet Lucy’

Interactive, purposeful storytelling meets Virtual Reality at Learn Do Share London with ‘Meet Lucy’ | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it
“I think technology acts as a trigger, it invites audiences to open new fictional doors that immediately transports them to another level of consciousness. It allows further engagement; it provokes new thoughts and connections. But that doesn’t mean that technology itself can make stories better; that magic is only in the hands of the teller/creator itself”.

Driving Change - Sheffield Doc/Fest 2013

Several highly experienced and passionate professionals will offer invaluable tips on how to get over tech (yes tech!) barriers which are stopping you from managing your media asset, growing your business and ensuring your shows have better chances of being shown around the world.
mirmilla's insight:

This panel is dedicated to technology from the point of view of producers and distributors
Beyond the limited pure technology references, what is interesting is that they all agree on one thing: the need to design a film keeping the audience in mind and the search of the audience before the film is finished.

As if to say that the holistic approach always trump.

The Futures of Nonfiction Storytelling - MIT TechTV

The Futures of Nonfiction Storytelling - MIT TechTV | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

Interesting panel held at MIT in November 2011.

From their experience, the four experts explain how technologies have brought to light new problems (eg, crowdsourcing used to identify dissidents in Iran), and new forms of project (eg providing a mosaic of experiences rather than creating separate groups opposed between them).

And if the panel is introduced by the moderator Jonathan Taplin with "The Crowd is Often Wrong" ... then it must be seen.

MIT TechTV – Communications Forum - Documentary Film and New Technologies | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

- mirmilla -

a must see video recorded on march 2012 at MIT Communications Forum.

(video run 1h 57')

abstract:

"Emerging digital technologies are opening powerful new ways to create and even to reconceptualize the documentary film. How will handheld video cameras and ubiquitous open-source computing change the nature of documentaries? What are the implications for makers and viewers of documentaries of today’s unprecedented access to online editing and distribution tools, to an ocean of data never before available to the general public? These and related questions will be central to our discussion. Panelists will include a scholar of digital culture, a producer who has begun to exploit emerging technologies, and a representative of a newly-important specialty of the digital age – a curator of digital artifacts."

A New Mythology. The Internet is the Next Great Story

A New Mythology. The Internet is the Next Great Story | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

Storytelling via the Internet needs a better name.

"Before climbing onto the project, Hollow’s producer Nathaniel Hansenand I had for a couple years asked ourselves a question, roughly:

is it even possible to produce interactive online cinematic content that maintains strong narrative and is as engaging as traditional forms of media?

Our assumption was that “interactive storytelling” on the web is like the wild west of non-fiction filmmaking, with very few rules, artists working to stake their claim, and unlimited virtual land up for grabs.

Yes, the technology is young, but it’s also a blank canvas, with endless possibilities. Further, because the Internet connects both individuals and technology across time and space, there’s a contextualized “hyper” element that no other medium can employ as cosmically among disparate communities and storytellers."

mirmilla's insight:

An interesting idea to bring interactive movies in theaters ... As early as 1967, the film Kinoautomat brought interactivity to the movies. We hope it will be developed further.

Society is Numb to Traditional Media - Danfung Dennis - Condition One

Danfung Dennis, well known for directing the documentary "Hell and Back Again", share some of his principles on technology and emotion:

"We're moving to this era of mobile and tablet computing

the changes are the same to when radio moved to broadcast, we had an opportunity to create an entirely format and new way of storytelling (…)

How do we redefine how we tell stories, how we connect and how we convey emotion?

The technology will drive the future of storytelling"

In 2011 Danfung Dennis "and three business partners co-founded the tech start-up Condition ONE to create an “immersive,” virtual reality-esque application for tablet devices that allows users to scroll around video footage with a wider field of vision."
