Qu’est-ce que la narration interactive?

Qu’est-ce que la narration interactive? | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

Digital Storytelling for Social Impact

"Few could argue that stortelling is a powerful tool to inspire action and change, and to influence thought leaders and decision makers. The shape and delivery of stories has also shifted dramatically in the digital era. Long-form narrative and conventionalism journalism now share a stage with messages 140 characters or images that disappear in seconds after they are opened. There have never been more ways to reach audiences, but it's also never been more difficult to really reach them."

A collection of platforms which are centred on making text, images and video more visually captivating, interactive and immersive

With publishers keen to keep viewers engaged, many are looking at opportunities to offer more immersive storytelling experiences, and add greater depth to the content they are producing, be it text, video or images.

A number of news outlets have worked to produce content which delivers a more immersive experience than traditional templates or styles may allow, such as the oft-cited New York Times Snow Fall feature,

Introduction to Database | Narrative | Archive

excerpt:

"Database|Narrative|Archive is a collection of seven 'essays' by nine thinkers and makers in the emergent medium of nonlinear digital storytelling.

A profusion of recent scholarly writing and cultural commentary addresses the sprawling, emergent realm of interactive narrative, which is itself part of a profound historical development that has been referred to as “the computerization of culture.” Categories such as “electronic literature,” “interactive database narrative," and ‘transmedia’ scholarship are amongst the many neologisms claiming to describe some of the emergent characteristics of interactive narrative."

The Futures of Nonfiction Storytelling - MIT TechTV | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

Interesting panel held at MIT in November 2011.

From their experience, the four experts explain how technologies have brought to light new problems (eg, crowdsourcing used to identify dissidents in Iran), and new forms of project (eg providing a mosaic of experiences rather than creating separate groups opposed between them).

And if the panel is introduced by the moderator Jonathan Taplin with "The Crowd is Often Wrong" ... then it must be seen.

Society is Numb to Traditional Media - Danfung Dennis - Condition One

Danfung Dennis, well known for directing the documentary "Hell and Back Again", share some of his principles on technology and emotion:

"We're moving to this era of mobile and tablet computing

the changes are the same to when radio moved to broadcast, we had an opportunity to create an entirely format and new way of storytelling (…)

How do we redefine how we tell stories, how we connect and how we convey emotion?

The technology will drive the future of storytelling"

In 2011 Danfung Dennis "and three business partners co-founded the tech start-up Condition ONE to create an “immersive,” virtual reality-esque application for tablet devices that allows users to scroll around video footage with a wider field of vision."

Nicolas Bole explains why the site "Le Blog Documentaire", directed by Cédric Mal, has decided to consider the webdocumentary as cinema itself.

What is interesting is not so much the short debate over the genre popularity, but the features that Bole identifies in the web documentary:

- the web multiplies new manners of storytelling starting from all kinds of sources (news, politics, sports, but also art, dance, poetry, etc..)

- our role as a spectator changes

- the emergence of new patterns of perception

Arnau Gifreu Castells: "Mixing documentary (non-fiction) and game (fiction) seems a strategy that many interactive documentary producers are considering, because the fact of reality combined with a structure that includes the users and put themselves at the heart of the action, creates a much more hyper and immersed scenario for the interactive documentary and its participants"...

The Age of Sensual Media Keynote

The Age of Sensual Media Keynote | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

"When FoST Founder, Charlie Melcher, was escorted onto a 1950's Hollywood movie set by a leopard-clad enchantress, the joys of being alive were in full force. Though the fictional plot was constructed by Punchdrunk as part of their most recent production, The Drowned Man, the visceral effect was beyond bona fide for Melcher. This transformative journey from passive audience member to lead protagonist was a reminder that our bodies are the most remarkable mediums for experiencing the world and the stories around us"

A New Mythology. The Internet is the Next Great Story

A New Mythology. The Internet is the Next Great Story | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

Storytelling via the Internet needs a better name.

"Before climbing onto the project, Hollow’s producer Nathaniel Hansenand I had for a couple years asked ourselves a question, roughly:

is it even possible to produce interactive online cinematic content that maintains strong narrative and is as engaging as traditional forms of media?

Our assumption was that “interactive storytelling” on the web is like the wild west of non-fiction filmmaking, with very few rules, artists working to stake their claim, and unlimited virtual land up for grabs.

Yes, the technology is young, but it’s also a blank canvas, with endless possibilities. Further, because the Internet connects both individuals and technology across time and space, there’s a contextualized “hyper” element that no other medium can employ as cosmically among disparate communities and storytellers."

Attitudes, Behaviours and Storytelling. Social science and twenty-first century ideas.

Another interesting video from "Power to the Pixel" 2012 about the presentation of Wayne Fletcher*.

Among the topics covered:

- storytelling from the audience's perspective

- how should we think about innovation

- people and innovations, people and storytelling

Excerpts:

"If we want to be successful, innovators or communicators in the twenty-first century we need to think very carefully, very closely to the motivations that people have to consume."

"If you understand the internal and external structure that govern certain action you're more likely to be able to influence those actions in the future.

I think the same applies in communication and in storytelling: if you understand the motivation the people have to consume certain types of entertainment and media then you're more likely to be able to produce content and media that people want to consume and share."
