TFI LIVE Podcast - Episode #1

"Yes, you heard right, we've started a podcast!

Why? Well, we're always thinking of new ways to showcase the projects that have gone through TFI, inform you on what we're up to and highlight the innovative thinkers that are in our communinty; our hope is TFI LIVE will touch on all of this (and more).

For our first episode we spotlight Picture Motion (starts at the 00:37 mark), a company that specializes in using social media, grassroots screenings and partnership development to create social action campaigns for documentary and narrative films (they've done so already for films like Bully, TFI alum God Loves Uganda and Fruitvale Station). We chat with their Director of Communications, Allie Hoffman, and their Director of Digital Strategy, Darcy Heusel.

Then we talk to 2012 TFI New Media Fund grantee (and recently announced byFilmmaker Magazine as one of the 25 New Faces of Independent Film) Elaine McMillion about her web documentary, Hollow (15:35)."

Pop Up Archive Breathes New (Media) Life into Dusty Archives | PBS

Pop Up Archive Breathes New (Media) Life into Dusty Archives | PBS | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

Pop Up Archive is an interesting project for archiving digital content in collaboration with SoundCloud and the Internet Archive.

The project created using web services (Omeka, an open source web publishing platform integrated with Wordpress) makes "archival audiovisual content searchable, shareable and reusable, without requiring technical expertise or substantial resources from producers"

Their goal is "for Pop Up Archive participants to realize the added efficiency of sharing content using web services, and feel empowered to catalog their content at the time of its creation -- without even realizing that they have made an active decision to archive. Content creators know the most about the material that they create, and it's ideal to organize and preserve that material in a manner that incorporates easily into existing workflows, at the time of creation, rather than at some point down the road."

excerpts:

We're paying close attention as audio and video material finds new life on the web and the boundaries between media formats increasingly blur. Frameworks like Zeega and libraries like Mozilla's Popcorn.js are stretching our definitions of interactive documentary and narrative, and producers and stations are incorporating web resources of all formats in beautiful work

Why not create better partnerships between innovators in content creation and innovators in content preservation and access? For these projects, Pop Up Archive will provide a gateway to invaluable archival material.

Interview with Simon Klose about disruptive storytelling, Linklib and "The Pirate Bay - away from keyboard" | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

"Editor Joe Botana (@zbutcher) and I (Eric Wise) interview director Simon Klose. Simon talks with us about his upcoming documentary The Pirate Bay – Away From Keyboard, it’s unique Creative Common’s license that allows anyone to remix the film and Linklib… his new interactive “second-screen” solution for online filmmakers."

mirmilla's insight:

A very interesting example of how to add layers of context and engage the audience. Linklib's highlight.

We look forward to seeing the TPB documentary.
