Good report...

Sven Awege's curator insight, February 25, 2013 4:17 AM

Social media and HIT combined can bring the behavioral changes, but as usual it will take time, more time than the pioneers expect.

The good thing is that it will definately happen, and will democratise health along the way.... slowly!

Alex Butler's comment, February 25, 2013 2:08 PM
I agree it will take time Sven, the interesting thing for me is that we have moved so quickly already. In a short space of time we have gone through the the democratization of information, into the even more powerful connectivity to each other and are coming out of the other side looking at big data and artificial intelligence shaping personal health management on a scale unimaginable 15 years ago. Technology becomes revolutionary though when it is no longer exciting but mundane and ubiquitous.

Meet the #cancer fighting Apple Watch app - the future of #digitalhealth is now

Meet the #cancer fighting Apple Watch app - the future of #digitalhealth is now | Doctors 2.0 & You | Scoop.it
We're well versed in the concept of patients of the future uploading symptoms for doctors to manage in real time. What we didn't know until now is that this future has arrived. King's College Hospital in London is piloting a scheme in which cancer patients going through chemotherapy treatments are given an Apple Watch running…
more...
Kristin Waldby's curator insight, May 14, 5:41 PM

The Apple Watch is used to tell time, to pay for groceries at the touch of a button, for doctors to communicate with other doctors, and now for patients to monitor their own health alongside their doctors. In the context of cancer patient care, quicker and more reliable health data could make a world of difference in their treatment plans and care.

Cancer paitents may have to take multiple pills and medications a day to fight the disease. It is important to take the medications as prescribed, on time, and at the right doasages. The Apple Watch running Medopad's chemotherapy application can send reminders to the patient who is wearing the divice to take their medications on time. Patients can also input that they have taken their medication and that information can be shared with the doctor to keep medical records up to date and as detailed as possible.

Monitoring one's body temperature and symptoms is also very important in cancer patient care. The application which is meant specifically for the Apple Watch, allows patients to input their body temperature, and gives daily reminders to check to do so. A patient can also input any symptoms they are having, which is vital for doctors to know in case of negative allergic reactions. Time may be of the essence with cancer patients, so the sooner a doctor is made aware of potential negative side effects a patient is having, the quicker the doctor can make adjustments to the treatment plan to give the patient a better fighting chance. Some paitents only see their oncologist once a week, some fewer, that is why it is so important for a doctor to have real time health data coming from their patients.

One improvement that I think would make the application better, would be to send alerts to doctors when paitents input certain symptoms or temperatures that could be serious and require immediate medical attention. This could alert the doctor to call the paitent to get more information and instruct the patient on what to do, such as go to the emergency room or to stop taking a certain medication. Medopad is also working on creating similar apps for other health issues, but when it comes to cancer care, the more information you have on a patient the better care they can recieve and in a more timely manner. Just another way that the Internet and technology are improving the health and lives of individuals.

Another potential effect of using this technology to help treat cancer patients is that it could create more fundatamental health disparities. Those who can afford to buy an apple watch or has insurance that would cover the cost may in the long run recieve better treatment as they have more monitors, reminders, and become more involved in their own treatment. Is it fair to have those with more money have more successful treatments?

The State Of Digital Excellence In The Pharmaceutical Industry In 2015 Capabilities

The State Of Digital Excellence In The Pharmaceutical Industry In 2015 Capabilities | Doctors 2.0 & You | Scoop.it
Pharmaceutical firms must adopt and consistently execute practices that lead to digital excellence and give them a competitive edge. Which of these firms are accelerating away from the rest of the marketplace? We found that only two—Merck and Bristol-Myers Squibb—are doing reasonably well and achieving excellence and maturity in their digital capability. Firms taking a disciplined approach to digital transformation achieved higher maturity in digital capability than their less-disciplined peers.
