The Woman With the Bionic Eye #digitalhealth #doctors20 | Doctors 2.0 & You | Scoop.it
What is it like to see again after years of blindness?

Denise Silber's insight:

This article from the Atlantic is of course well written and recommended reading, but the subtitle is a bit of an overpromise.  1) The person receiving the bionic eye is no longer totally without sight, but she is not seeing in the conventional definition. There is a learning curve. 2) And this technique will only work in certain cases.

Denise Silber's insight:

As the word spreads that the patient voice is to be respected, more conferences include or feature patients, and new actions like this one at PatientsLikeMe, or recently at BMJ occur. (Our Doctors 2.0 & You event, was born with the idea of bringing patients, physicians, and all stakeholders together without hierarchy.)

Health apps 'useless' says health app expert #mhealth #digitalhealth #doctors20

Health apps 'useless' says health app expert #mhealth #digitalhealth #doctors20 | Doctors 2.0 & You | Scoop.it
Amid claims that healthcare applications from Apple and Samsung will assist in propelling the health hardware industry to be worth $3 billion by 2019, an Australian expert in eHealth systems has described recent health apps as ‘useless’.

Denise Silber's insight:

The title of this article a bit misleading - Apps could be useful but they are not, according to the author, because the data is not connected to physicians. The author doesn't address what could be a different major challenge to apps- sustainability of the interest of the user, and what about the efficiency of the activity itself... (PatientView pointed this article out)

Two new studies make a case against too much medicine

Denise Silber's insight:

From "not enough" to "too much",  while modern medicine has singularly participated in the extension of our lifespans, there is always progress to be made. Oxford and BMJ are in the midst of a conference about this, hence the TIme magazine article. Hello to Doctors 2.0 & You speaker Tessa Richards from the BMJ who is involved in this subject.

Angelina Jolie’s Surgery May Have Doubled Genetic Testing at One Clinic #hcsm #hcsmeu #doctors20 #cancer #epatients | Doctors 2.0 & You | Scoop.it
When Jolie announced her surgery to prevent cancer due to a genetic predisposition, she encouraged other women to get checked too, study says

Denise Silber's insight:

If physicians were the only motors of the health system, these study figures would not be true. Doctors would alone recommend and obtain all the results we need. But, alas, it takes participation from multiple stakeholders, beginning with the patient, and  multiple reminders are necessary.
