Don't lose sight of why the US is out to get Julian Assange

Don't lose sight of why the US is out to get Julian Assange | DJ.Womble Daily - Magazine | Scoop.it
Seumas Milne: Ecuador is pressing for a deal that offers justice to Assange's accusers – and essential protection for whistleblowers...

The solution is obvious. It's the one that Ecuador is proposing – and that London and Stockholm are resisting. If the Swedish government pledged to block the extradition of Assange to the US for any WikiLeaks-related offence (which it has the power to do) – and Britain agreed not to sanction extradition to a third country once Swedish proceedings are over – then justice could be served. But with loyalty to the US on the line, Assange shouldn't expect to leave the embassy any time soon.

How to resolve the Julian Assange issue by filmmakers Michael Moore and Oliver Stone

How to resolve the Julian Assange issue by filmmakers Michael Moore and Oliver Stone | DJ.Womble Daily - Magazine | Scoop.it

"If Mr. Assange is extradited to the United States, the consequences will reverberate for years around the world. Mr. Assange is not an American citizen, and none of his actions have taken place on American soil. If the United States can prosecute a journalist in these circumstances, the governments of Russia or China could, by the same logic, demand that foreign reporters anywhere on earth be extradited for violating their laws. The setting of such a precedent should deeply concern everyone, admirers of WikiLeaks or not."

Craig Murray - Naming Anna Ardin as Assange accuser on Newsnight | DJ.Womble Daily - Magazine | Scoop.it

Good summary of the public facts as of October 2010.

Add in the secret US court  of 'sealed' hearings preparing to prosecute Assange, a publisher, an Australian, for treason yet ignoring the New York Times et al that also carried Wikileaks stories.

Assange may be an arrogant fool to imagine he could take on the mighty USA. Thats not a crime.

The public don't pay photographers to follow Rihanna around or pay journalists to make things up about her, writes Hind.

..we have tried leaving important and difficult decisions in the hands of the experts of the regulatory state or to the play of market forces. The financial crisis and the bungling response have made both options seem absurd. This might seem like a time to start thinking seriously about democracy.

Reprieve—Shooting apps fine, says Apple, just don’t mention the drone attacks | DJ.Womble Daily - Magazine | Scoop.it
Apple has for the third time this month rejected an iPhone app which alerts the user to a drone attack and to the number of people killed.

This is no doubt an uncomfortable prospect for the US authorities, whose use of drones extends to Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia, where no war has been declared. Such drone strikes have killed more than 3,300 people in Pakistan alone since 2004, according to reports by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism. Reprieve is working to expose and challenge the programme, through investigation on the ground and representing victims in legal action across various..

Daily Kos: WaPo's Tacit Threat to Ecuador for Granting Assange Asylum

Daily Kos: WaPo's Tacit Threat to Ecuador for Granting Assange Asylum | DJ.Womble Daily - Magazine | Scoop.it

The notoriously conservative Washington Post (WaPo) editorial board published a tacit threat to Ecuador for Ecuador's granting Wikileaks founder Julian Assange asylum :

Since when do run-of-the-mill sexual assault suspects cause the U.K to threaten to storm the Ecuadorian Embassy, and Scotland Yard to spend $80,000 a day guarding the Ecuadorian Embassy? If that's the case, the U.S should spend a little more money hunting down Roman Polanski, who actually pleaded guilty to sexual assault and then fled the country.

the U.S. has empaneled a grand jury and is seeking to indict Assange on Espionage Act charges or worse
