How Writing a Learning Journal Can Increase Critical Thinking Skills

How Writing a Learning Journal Can Increase Critical Thinking Skills | Distant education | Scoop.it
“Remember reflection? That’s something we used to do occasionally before we all became addicted to checking our Web-enabled devices every few minutes for our much-needed digital data fixes. Prior to the mobile revolution, people could at times be seen staring off into space, just thinking. If you were to spot someone doing that today, you’d …”

Um artigo bastante pertinente que nos remete para uma importante reflexão (Writing and keeping journals. A guide for educators and social practitioners)  sobre os benefícios associados à criação de um jornal, independentemente do propósito para o qual seja criado...

According to the American Library Association, by 2020, information on the Internet will be doubling every 15 minutes. Consuming information without taking the time to reflect is bad for the development of critical thinking skills. Without reflection, we become locked in a pattern of remembering and communicating information without taking the time to assess whether the information is true, utter garbage, or a valuable missing piece in a puzzle.[...]

A journal is also a tool for self-discovery, an aid to concentration, a mirror for the soul, a place to generate and capture ideas, a safety valve for the emotions, a training ground for the writer, and a good friend and confidant. (op. cit.)

Inventive Games That Teach Kids About Empathy and Social Skills

Inventive Games That Teach Kids About Empathy and Social Skills | Distant education | Scoop.it
“Play is nothing if not social. Games organize play, allowing us to wrangle it and use it to experiment with the world. When we play games, more often than not, it's us under the microscope. But there's a trend in design toward video games that build social skills and encourage players to reflect on themselves and their relationships. Here are a few games that do just that.”
Via Ana Cristina Pratas
Casper Pieters's insight:
Socialisation is one of the downsides of distance education, where kids do not always benefit from complex social interactions on a daily basis. Creating games to overcome this are very useful, provided they really work.

5 Minutes With Martin Dougiamas from Moodle

5 Minutes With Martin Dougiamas from Moodle | Distant education | Scoop.it
“ The term “LMS” can mean a lot of things and I rarely use it for Moodle. Moodle was always designed as a learning platform, more like an operating system or a “lego set” which allows you to create exactly the tool you need for a particular learning situation, ranging from the smallest home school up to the largest University. Every class is different.” This is possible because Moodle has evolved with a lot of configuration options over the years, and most importantly, because we are open source, our community includes a whole ecosystem of developers that have created hundreds of plugins, integrations and techniques to address specific needs and niches. It’s amazing what you can create with Moodle. The downside of all this is that the staff who are implementing Moodle at a particular institution need to take a fairly deep and serious approach to analysing what they need, researching what is available, and customising Moodle by removing options, adding plugins and designing the interface to make it the optimal tool for their own situation. It should be well-integrated with the other systems around it. It should be made to look good with attractive school branding. Finally, like any major IT system, the inclusion, training and enculturing of the educators who will be using Moodle is absolutely critical to success. I see a lot of schools just install a vanilla Moodle with its default configuration and expect great online learning to start happening – it rarely does. Teachers on the frontline are generally far too overworked already to work all this out on their own.
