I love that she acknowledges that the words "open" "online" and "learning" are the most abused words in education today.

Competency-based bachelor's from Brandman could be glimpse of the future @insidehighered

Competency-based bachelor's from Brandman could be glimpse of the future @insidehighered | Distance Education & Open Learning | Scoop.it
M.A.P.'s insight:

Unique in several aspects:

1.  Totally competency-based

2.  Fully online, mobile learning

3.  One of the first 4 institutions in the US get the approval, "direct assessment" from the US Dept of Education.

4.  Turn an existing bachelor program into competency=based program.

I'm still not sure how competency-based program will change the objectives of HE.  If it's only the adult non-traditional students, then I have no issue with it.  But if it is going to replace the trad HE for trad students, then I'm not sure if it's right ways to go.  To me, HE is not just for career oriented,  specially the first year.  Students should learn different subjects across different disciplines.  It will develop logical reasoning, critical thinking, appreciation of the world, etc,  All these won't be covered in a competency-based program cause they are irrelevant to the career objective.  In the long run, how will it affect the next generation?

I haven't read the report yet, but 4 out of the 10 themes have already attracted my attention, which are: Massive Open Social Learning, Learning Design Informed by Analytics, Learning to Learn, and Event-based Learning.

What is learning in the current new context?  The "social"
element of learning, from LD to Assessment to LA and back to LD, etc are also topics in the Eden 2014 Research Workshop that I attended last month.  So pretty excited to see these articles.

Online competency-based education is going to revolutionize the workforce, not MOOCs

Online competency-based education is going to revolutionize the workforce, not MOOCs | Distance Education & Open Learning | Scoop.it
We already know that recruiting is an imprecise activity, and degrees don’t communicate much about a candidate’s potential and fit, but now data is confirming this. Employers need to know what a student knows and can do.

Finally, he talked about LA.  How should educators use LA in a better ways, not just to predict the success and failure of students and the supports, but how to use the data to develop adaptive learning in helping students.

Equity-in-Competency-Education-103014.pdf

M.A.P.'s insight:

Competency education starts getting educators' attention and many institutions have already carried out.  So regardless of course delivery formats, we should pay attention to the development of competency education.  This report concerns about equity issue that might be created by competency education.  3 such concerns are:

"Skills, strategies, attitudes, and behavior of individual learners"

"Access to, and use of, digital technologies that can contribute to personalization and customization of learning and assessment"

"Access to structured and assessed learning experiences outside of the traditional school day and year"

It is a timely report cause not many researches have been done on the area; hence, worthy of reading it.

This report highlights some issues facing OER in the US.  For instance, about two-thirds of faculties are unaware of OER.  Faculties like the OER concept, yet, few faculties actually use one.  Reasons?  Time and effort to find and to evaluate the quality of OER materials.

No wonder some think OER has not created a significant impact on the higher education system.

OER for open learning is a common practice.  It gives educators and students to access education materials they need.

Meanwhile, there's some open academic journals online but still not become the mainstream.

The launch of "paperity" might break the status quo.  It covers across a wide range of disciplines.

I also like the delivery format. Instead of downloading the paper, the pdf copy is displayed on the web.  Quite convenient and easy to read.

Emerging adaptive software puts faculty members in charge of course creation @insidehighered

Emerging adaptive software puts faculty members in charge of course creation @insidehighered | Distance Education & Open Learning | Scoop.it
M.A.P.'s insight:

The case that mentioned in the article tells us how adaptive learning is being used in an online course.  While it's hard to define adaptive learning, the article does categories 3 different forms of AL approach.

The first one is collecting big data about how students learn.  Then course materials are tailored to individual students.

The second group is using adaptive software that will "respond to students like an automated tutor."

The third approach is creating customizable adaptive platforms.  Then professors and instructional designer will work close together on the platform.  In the case that mentioned in the article, a personalized virtual learning laboratories and robust, user-friendly discussion boards were created.  Result?  1500 students took the course.  They said the course was challenging, and required more work than a lecture class, but it's also more enjoyable.
