Digging Deeper into Learners’ Experiences in MOOCs: Participation in social networks outside of MOOCs, Notetaking, and contexts surrounding content consumption.

Researchers describe with increasing confidence what they observe participants doing in massive open online courses (MOOCs). However, our understanding of learner activities in open courses is limited by researchers’ extensive dependence on log file
M.A.P.'s insight:

Since I am a MOOCs student, I m always interested to read research papers about our learning experience.  This is one of those papers that have attracted me to read through it.

The researchers aimed to find out why learners:

"...do what they do, how they do what they do, and what it is like to participate in MOOCs..."

Through a qualitative research method, the researchers found out "3 consistent aspects of [learning] experience:  learner interactions in social networks outside of MOOC platforms, notetaking, and the contextual factors that surround content consumption."

The Invisible Learners Taking MOOCs | Higher Ed Beta | InsideHigherEd

The Invisible Learners Taking MOOCs | Higher Ed Beta | InsideHigherEd | Distance Education & Open Learning | Scoop.it
M.A.P.'s insight:

The author and his colleague are conducting a large scale of survey on MOOCs students now.

The objectives are " We want to better understand open courses and their learners (and their successes and their failures). How do these people experience open courses? Why they do they things that they do in these courses?"

The article is an initial findings of 3 questions in their survey:

"1. Successful online learners have sophisticated study skills.

2. Flexibility and a flexible life are often essential for engaged participation.

3. Online learning is an emotional experience. "

As a MOOCs student myself, I totally agree with these 3 findings, particularly the last one.  Educators and researchers might pay little attention on this point.  I remember one of the lady in our class posted her frustration and prepared to give up in the forum.  Then, many students quickly gave their support and advices to the lady, which eventually changed her mind to keep on and solved the course problem.  To her and the rest, this is an emotional experience.

Lakehead University aims to change the way people in the North access post-secondary education

Lakehead University aims to change the way people in the North access post-secondary education | Distance Education & Open Learning | Scoop.it
M.A.P.'s insight:

Look like universities are increasingly using immersive technology telepresence systems to reach communities in the North of this country.  Last week, SFU announced its EMBA would use those communicate devices in its Prince Rupert, Terrace, and Kitimat satellite campus.  This week, Lakehead received 1 million fundings from the Ontario govt for developing telepresence systems to reach students in the north of ON.  Like SFU, virtual classrooms will be established in Orillia, Sioux Lookout and Kenora campus.  I tend to believe such education opportunities will benefit the First Nation people in the long run and might help them to overcome the hardships they face at present.

Employer perspectives on competency-based education - AEI

Employer perspectives on competency-based education - AEI | Distance Education & Open Learning | Scoop.it
While excitement is growing over the potential for competency-based education to change US higher education, many employers don't even know what it is.
M.A.P.'s insight:

2 challenges:

1.  Awareness of CBE is relatively low among employers.

2.  Some employers concern about CBE students might lack the general skills.

I'm a little bit confused.  Isn't that many employers said students lack the skills to do the jobs?  I thought employers' complaints were one of the driving force of CBE.

M.A.P.'s insight:

I guess this is one of the few books at present that looks into MOOCs and Open Education about the world.  There are 8 parts and 29 chapters in the book that examine the past, current, and the future of MOOCs and Open Education, the model of MOOCs and Online courses, OE in the developing world and in corporate settings, etc.  Several authors are familiar to those who following the trend of MOOCs and OE.  Interesting enough, my MOOCs is one of the authors too (he is a good teacher to us).  So it's worthwhile to find the book and read it.  A relatively detailed abstract of each chapter is available through the link.
