Are MOOCs the answer? An Indian Perspective

Are MOOCs the answer? An Indian Perspective | Distance Education & Open Learning | Scoop.it
They are the buzzwords in the education sector. The popularity of these open courses is gaining steadily, with thousands of students across the globe enrolling online.

Via Dr. Susan Bainbridge
M.A.P.'s insight:

"Eventually, MOOCs will evolve beyond the delivery of online courses to becoming a pervasive resource where open access to cutting-edge university research (as well as teaching) will play a pivotal role in guiding the decisions of individuals in matters that affect their lives the most."  This is the ideal objective.  As the commenter said at the end of the article, the low penetration of Internet, language constraint, local knowledge, etc. are all barriers at present.

Not Your Mothers Father of Distance Education - (Another perspective of Distance Education) | Distance Education & Open Learning | Scoop.it
If History has forgotten the Society, and eduprenuers have usurped innovation, then Thrun’s pivot, and EdX and Coursera have also forgotten the dispossessed. The Society achieved something that modern mooc innovations have so far failed to do: Openness. Access. Egalitarianism.
M.A.P.'s insight:
It's not really about Fathers or Mothers of Distance Education.  Rather, it's about the true objectives of DE, openness, access, egalitarianism, like the learning opportunities gave to US women.  The author argues that modern DE providers are preoccupied by Ed Tech devt and have forgotton those original objectives of DE.

“I always tell the [Ontario government to] be careful about the changes you’re making. There is a lot to be said about the status quo,” he said. The “worry is that if we start to reward retention, we will reward who gets admitted.”
M.A.P.'s insight:
To me, there are 2 interesting points caught my eyers.  It's not the LA aspect.  But: (1) A 10% difference of grad rate btw int'l and domestic students.  (2) incentive to retention will become incentive to tougher admittance criteria.  Different kinds of interventions for failing students that used by different PSE also worthwhile reading.

I like this article.  At first look, the article is just 16 interviews.  A second look will tell us it actually introduces 16 innovative ways to improve student success.  One specially interesting to me is giving psy boost to students losing the study steam, a joint project btw Stanford and Columbia.  Other methods like reforming the remediation program, using OER, applying CBE to degree program, etc. sound familiar but the point is adapting these methods to the individual situation and make it works.  All are outwardly serving students in the first place.

Education at a Glance 2016 - OECD Indicators - en - OECD

Education at a Glance 2016 - OECD Indicators - en - OECD | Distance Education & Open Learning | Scoop.it
Data and research on education including skills, literacy, research, elementary schools, childhood learning, vocational training and PISA, PIACC and TALIS surveys.,

Education at a Glance is the authoritative source for information on the state of education around the world. It provides key information on the output of educational institutions; the impact of learning across countries; the financial and human resources invested in education; access, participation and progression in education; and the learning environment and organisation of schools.

The 2016 edition introduces a new indicator on the completion rate of tertiary students and another one on school leaders. It provides more trend data and analysis on diverse topics, such as: teachers’ salaries; graduation rates; expenditure on education; enrolment rates; young adults who are neither employed nor in education or training; class size; and teaching hours. The publication examines gender imbalance in education and the profile of students who attend, and graduate from, vocational education.

The report covers all 35 OECD countries and a number of partner countries (Argentina, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Indonesia, Lithuania, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia and South Africa).

This edition includes more than 125 figures and 145 tables. The Excel™ spreadsheets used to create them are available via the StatLinks provided throughout the publication. More data is available in the OECD Education Statistics database.

M.A.P.'s insight:
This is an important and thorough education report.  If time is limited, then check out the video highlight, or the summary.  Data tables are also available.  Apparently, budget strain is still an issue.  Meanwhile, life long learning is getting important as an long term goal in many countries.  Must read.

M.A.P.'s insight:
This is a very thorough paper and require patience to read it.  While the theme is about flexibility, the paper traced Open Distance Education (ODL) history back to Adam Smith's idea and down to present.  I like the idea that too flexible or too rigid won't be solid.  The limitation of flexibility through the iron triangle (Access, Quality, Cost) is well explained.  Finally, the author suggested the 3 "0" to solve the issue namely, option, outcome, and organization.
