Oculus Rift Inventor Palmer Luckey: Virtual Reality Will Make Distance Irrelevant (Q&A) | Re/code | Distance Education & Home Schooling | Scoop.it
It’s worth remembering that virtual reality has never always been about gaming. Any real virtual reality enthusiast can look back at VR science fiction. It’s not about playing games … “The Matrix,”...

Gord Holden's insight:

We're already there at our school with students and teachers living across Canada working together. VR has some incredible potential to "up the game" as it were though, making avatars more expressive and genuine.

Thanks Scott Miller for both the build and the guided tour. This is a game-changer for education and business. Amazes me how some cannot see that. Nice to see this coinciding with the 20 year anniversary of Active Worlds.

40 percent of parents learn how to use technology from their children

Teresa Correa, University Diego Portales (in Santiago, Chile), conducted in-depth interviews with 14 parent/child sets and surveyed 242 parent/child sets.
Gord Holden's insight:

My hiring policy includes finding out if teachers have tweens at home. If not, they'll not be able to keep up. 18 year olds tend to be "over the hill" when it comes to new technology. Give me a new teacher with a 6, 9, and 12 year old, and I'll be comfortable knowing that they'll be able to address the "tech challenge" in education for at least a decade.

Gord Holden's insight:

Not hard to imagine a Heavenly Father who is a Creator. "Making" things seems to be hardwired into us. This propensity is a challenge to address with classes of 30 students, but sometimes just as challenging when there is only one. Many are finding an outlet in virtual worlds such as Minecraft. I have my reservations about that particular platform for a number of reasons, but other platforms such as Active Worlds can be far more powerful and practical, both at school & and home. Gord Holden's insight:

Here's my brief presentation for ISTE 2014. If it seems like an advertisement for AWEDU, well, this development is worth the attention. To my way of thinking, while many 3D virtual platforms offer a lot, they each have a weakness. This one has none that I can see.

Homeschooled: How American Homeschoolers Measure Up

Homeschooled: How American Homeschoolers Measure Up | Distance Education & Home Schooling | Scoop.it
A look at the history, performance and outcomes of the American homeschooling movement.
Gord Holden's insight:

We started saving with an educational plan for our first-born daughter the day she was born. I found it interesting that of the 20 lucrative scholarships handed out, something like 14-16 or them would go to students who had homeschooled. In their cases, I think they were brilliant individuals, which was why they were better of proceeding at their own pace vs. the average pace of a classroom. These stats do make a strong case for homeschooling, but given that some 95% of the parents have post-secondary education, I'm think this speaks to the fact that homeschooling families are generally well prepared for doing it. Like Ford though, who was fine with giving customers cars in any colour "As long as it's black"  I think the public school system should be paying attention to some of the reasons given for pulling students out, or continue to bleed the very students who they most need to be in their classrooms. JMHO.

David speaks here about the transformational results in his own education, and gives good cause for other educators to explore this engaging pathway to learning with their students.
