A lot of parents and students too, seem to harbor the notion that online education is meant only for students belonging to higher grades. With its independent mode of delivering information, it is but natural for one to assume that an online environment would be suitable for those capable of studying independently.

Terry Harding's comment, September 25, 2013 7:55 PM
Thanks Lindsey. The myth that home educated children cannot be well-socialised, needs to be continually addressed. It is based upon the strange assumption that 13 years of compulsory schooling , spent predominantly with age-peers, is a key to the social development of children. Research into the social development of home educated children, has demonstrated that home education has not disadvantaged them either socially or developmentally.

Common Core will drive more to home schooling

Common Core will drive more to home schooling | Distance Education and Home Schooling | Scoop.it
In her Feb. 8 feature in The News-Times, "Home schooling numbers and opportunities grow," reporter Eileen FitzGerald lucidly explained home education simply by telling families' stories. The common thread is the parents' desire to customize their children's education by carefully selecting a curriculum as well as looking for opportunities for children to use resources in the community and explore their individual interests.
Terry Harding's insight:

An individualised approach to education always creates better outcomes for children than what Paulo Friere termed as "massification".

However, students who are educated in the home-based context, have the distinct advantage, in that they are not cocooned in the cloistered environment of a school for 13 years. I feel so sorry for these people. If I understand correctly, the German families originally migrated to Germany from Russia thinking that they were returning 'home' and life would be much better. But because the German government is fearful of any sort of 'fundamentalism' it even oppresses those who will make the most useful citizens. It is more astonishing that the US Federal government should be doing the same thing. But the US and Australia are similar in that more and more people are dependent upon government largesse and are willing to overlook erosions of freedom. I am not sure what it will take to loosen this dependence upon the government.
