This page points to a somewhat interactive infographic about 7  elements of human centric information technologies. While the target here is government, it is a model that can apply to any enterprise whether corporate or academic. The Traditionalists are those who do business as usual. Or else they are too busy being either time or financially constrained to try anything out of the track (rut) already planned. Whereas the Transformers are calculated risk takers who focus on the needs of their members/clients/audience. They adapt to and adopt new policies as well as new technologies. These changes will lead to further changes as they evaluate and move forward with their successes.

What I like about this infographic is that it presents a parallel viewpoint of the processes each culture uses for comparison. For example stage one: Traditionalist - "The Current Model leads to loss, error, and duplication; while the Transformer's tip 1 is to Think Big, Start Small. And so one.

Again consider this chart as a metaphor or model for your agency or enterprise. In some cases it is signing to the choir of transformers, on the other hand it may provide the Transformer guidance in approaching a Traditionalist Management process.

The author goes on to describe the processes and provides some examples as well as a SWF video. It is a long post, but take the time to read it all.

 

As I interpret the notion of #NEMETICS I see it related to a couple things as identifying processes for activities listed near the end of the article. Also, there are mentions of iteration and growth. I reminds me of Jeff Conklin's work ( http://www.cognexus.org/cognexus_institute.htm ) on Dialog Mapping using Compendium ( http://projects.kmi.open.ac.uk/compendium/ ) based on Issue Based Information Systems ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Issue-Based_Information_System ).

 

My visual would be a 2x2 matrix with N, E, M, E in each of the four squares. There would be a spiral that begins in the lower left of N and then move through the other three squares. Instead of just continuing as one line, there could be multiple branches that continue (iterate) or due to the Exchange would point to other 2x2 matrices of a similar nature.

This is a good bibliographic style post that has links to 100 resources in topics of where teaching, learning, training, eLearning, and educational technologies are headed. Many of these link are sources from leaders in their respective communities. This is a worthwhile read.

This is the first time that I have read insights to McLuhan's work that has made sense to me and explained some of the difficulties with McLuhan work from the books mentioned. The four attributes and explanation are useful when considering adopting new or emerging resources or technology. It reminds me of people who follow the notion of if I purchase X then I have to remove a similar item at home or else I will be overwhelmed with clutter (information?).

This shows how a home 3D printer from Makerbot is able to rapidly prototype and even create working products that help people survive. 3D printing is often associated with corporate design or art or other things. This is the first case I have seen a 3D printer used to improve mobility and physically aiding people to have more normal lives.

 

Keep in mind this is a good model that communities, agencies, maker space participants should follow. We have many veterans returning from the current and recent "police actions" over seas who need prosthetic supplements. Get cracking folks! Tinker! Make! and let's help each other.

"Now, this imminent disruption to higher education that Shirky goes on to describe is not a new topic, at least not in social media circles where we love to discuss the disruption of anything and everything (and, in fact, wrote a book about it).  But the higher education issue is one that I am concerned that not enough associations are thinking about (that I can see).  Associations, most of them anyway, are in the business of professional development for the people in their industries.  Are you positioning yourself to be part of the new world of social learning when it starts to happen overnight?  What happens to the millions of new college graduates in a couple of years who are used to learning online? For the past decade or more Higher Education, among other industries, has lived in a climate of paradox. This reviewer was on the "Academic Computing" side of the fence where the innovators and free range chickens were exploring new technologies (aka "shiny new toy"), but at the same time making contributions to the corpus of knowledge that the Academy demands. On the other side of the fence were the "Administrative Computing" folk. They represented the business aspects of education. Their reputation was much like a secret society that kept everything locked up and hidden from the world. Since then there have been different attempts to blend libraries with academic computing, administrative computing, and oh yes, telephones and television on campus. Pardon the long prelude, but this article is a refreshing lead into a post from Clay Shirkey on the "imminent disruption to higher education" in general from social media, open everything, ubiquitous computing. And believe it or not, the new digital generation does know where the OFF SWITCH is. The problem is that many of the older generation don't know where the ON SWITCH in.

This is one of the more succinct descriptions of Design Thinking in Business versus Graphic or 3D or Product Design. Brief, to the point. The process described could result in processes that one usually considers to be "outside of the box." On the other hand the results as described are creative (new & innovative) and have longevity (sustainable & viable). This reviewer plans to look into this line of thinking more for application to online learning and distance teaching. Design Thinking for Education.
