Blending the University: Beyond MOOCs

SlideShare presentation by Gigi Johnson, EdD:  "In this presentation at SXSWedu in March 2013, Dr. Gigi Johnson explores the fuzzy world of “blended” courses in higher education. She dissects the tensions and tribulations as universities attempt to blend F2F and web-enriched tools in traditional environments, including challenges of time, space, and data politics in research universities, challenges with cost structures and faculty development, and abundant legal and IP issues. What is a class vs. what it could be with rich alternative technologies for learning? How do old universities rethink “class” instead of “just” repackage learning in a blended environment?" from source: http://www.slideshare.net

Mastering Organizational Knowledge Flow: Creating a Super Water Cooler

Mastering Organizational Knowledge Flow: Creating a Super Water Cooler | Distance Ed Archive | Scoop.it

"This blog focuses on ideas and findings around enhancing the knowledge flow in a range of organizations. It serves as a discussion ground for the ideas presented in my books "Mastering Organizational Knowledge Flow - How to make Knowledge Sharing Work" and "Connecting Organizational Silos: Taking Knowledge Flow Management to the Next Level with Social Media"." from source: http://masterknowledgeflow.blogspot.ch

ghbrett's insight:

This is link goes to a post likening Knowlege Management (KM) and Enterprise Social Networking (ESN) to the ephemeral conversations at the proverbial water cooler. He notes that KM has been declining in the literature by a 2% margin in the past year where as ESN are increasing. He goes on to express positives and caveats about the digital environment, but is positive about open about the need for sharing.

Store, Share and Connect with Your Own Private Cloud: ownCloud

Store, Share and Connect with Your Own Private Cloud: ownCloud | Distance Ed Archive | Scoop.it

"ownCloud helps enterprises concerned about sensitive data leakage via Dropbox deliver a secure file sync and share solution on site, on their storage, integrated with their infrastructure and security systems, managed to their policies. The result is an easy-to-use solution that provides complete control over sensitive corporate data." from source: https://owncloud.com

ghbrett's insight:

This is a solution that makes a lot of sense to me. Keeping the curation and management of content locally will allow personal and enterprise installations to share content among their community.

If you are looking for a good and safe alternative to Drobox or Box.net here is one: Owncloud is an open source software which you can install on your own web server and which provides you not only with full file storage and sharing capabilties, but also with the ability to connect directly to other file storage services and to run HTML5 apps.

Excerpted from the Techcrunch review: "OwnCloud is a free software suite, written in PHP, that provides file storage, synchronization, and sharing. It provides the same basic features of Dropbox or Box.net."

"The core ownCloud offering is file storage and synchronization. You also get optional contacts and calendar synchronization, if you want to use it. As an open source application, you can install it on any computer you control. This means you know how and where your data is stored, something which existing hosted solutions abstract away from you. Individuals and enterprises can install ownCloud on their own hardware, and define access policies according to their own needs."

"...the ownCloud mobile client can automatically upload pictures taken from your phone."

"...ownCloud can be connected to third-party storage like Dropbox or Google Drive or even an FTP server. These are read-write connections, allowing you to use third-party storage in whatever ways make sense for you..."

"...ownCloud supports HTML5 applications, allowing you to add all sorts of additional functionality. The ownCloud app catalog has dozens of apps."

NOT-HG-13-003: Request for Information (RFI): Training Needs in Response to Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Initiative

"The National Institutes of Health is launching Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K), an initiative to address how best to manage and utilize the large amounts of biomedical data that new technologies can generate (http://www.nih.gov/news/health/dec2012/od-07.htm).

... The era of ‘Big Data’ has arrived for biomedical research, bringing with it immense challenges as well as spectacular opportunities. In this context, ‘Big Data’ is meant to reflect the challenges facing biomedical researchers of all stripes in accessing, organizing, analyzing, and integrating datasets that are increasingly larger, more complex, and more numerous. These data are also of diverse types that must be integrated, including imaging, phenotypic, molecular, exposure, health, and many other types of biomedical, behavioral and clinical data. While used here for convenience, the phrase ‘Big Data’ is intended to be shorthand for the reality that biomedical research has become a data-intensive enterprise.

Advances in biomedical sciences using Big Data will require more scientists with appropriate expertise and skills, some of whom will be critical members of interdisciplinary teams. NIH is interested in increasing funding for long- and short-term training at all professional levels, in areas essential for accessing, organizing, analyzing, and integrating biomedical Big Data (e.g., computational biology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, the quantitative sciences, and related areas)." - from source: http://grants.nih.gov

ghbrett's insight:

Big Data, data mining, and the aggregation of data from varied resources are becoming more important to the research community. This initiative of NIH should provide findings and information that can transfer and be applied to other communities and agencies.

Army upgrades protected communications satellite terminal training suite | Article | The United States Army

Army upgrades protected communications satellite terminal training suite | Article | The United States Army | Distance Ed Archive | Scoop.it

"FORT GORDON, Ga. (Feb. 25, 2013) -- The Army recently began schoolhouse computer-based and simulated training upgrades for its advanced Secure Mobile Anti-Jam Reliable Tactical -- Terminal to evolve the previous legacy training system to accommodate new system enhancements.

... "These training enhancements increase efficiencies for both the Army and Marine Corps," said Larry Raville, SMART-T project lead. "If these Soldiers have an AEHF SMART-T fielded to their unit, they will have already had the Advanced EHF training, eliminating the need for delta training had they only been trained on the legacy system."

... "Simulation is a big focus now because our forces can train in real-time without having to utilize valuable satellite resources," said Mel Pointer, SMART-T logistics management specialist. "Now instead of Soldiers logging on to the actual satellite for training, they can use the SATSIM, and that satellite resource can be more appropriately dedicated to an operational unit where it is most needed." TED Prize Winner: The School In the Cloud

TED Prize Winner: The School In the Cloud | Distance Ed Archive | Scoop.it

"Education has been a growing theme at TED. It's one that seems to strongly resonate across the community, from techies to creatives to entrepreneurs to big business C.E.O.'s. One idea that is gaining popularity is around the notion that education has to encourage and reinforce kids' natural curiosity. Unfortunately, conventional education does a very efficient job of beating kids' natural curiosity out of them. This year's TED prize winner, Dr. Sugata Mitra—the first to step up to $1 million in prize money—tackles this issue head on.

Dr. Mitra, an educational researcher and professor of educational technology at Newcastle University (UK), wishes to design the School in the Cloud—a learning lab in India, based on his vision for Self Organized Learning Environments (SOLE). The school draws inspiration from Mitra’s “Hole in the Wall” experiments, in which he observed children both learning and teaching on their own and without any guidance or intervention." from source: http://www.linkedin.com

There is not much I can say, but Congratulations to Dr. Mitra and WAKE UP America!  Many of you all who are reading this already know the value of Dr. Mitra's work, if only indirectly by using similar techniques and technologies yourselves. It is becoming critical that administrators, as well as local, state, and federal education agencies and personnel better understand what they must do to preserve an nation of life long learners.

Thank you T.E.D. administrators, staff, and community for bringing this to the attention of your world wide community. Dr. Mitra well deserves this award.

"Nebula is an open-source cloud computing platform that was developed to provide an easily quantifiable and improved alternative to building additional expensive data centers and to provide an easier way for NASA scientists and researchers to share large, complex data sets with external partners and the public.

... Cloud computing is a significant departure from the traditional IT infrastructure model. It will require technical training as well as a shift in how our teams and programs think about IT resources. This shift will require us to change budgeting, procurement, workflow, and our approach toward processing, storing, and accessing data. As a mission-driven Agency that is reliant upon data, we will need to provide adequate education and training to employees and contractors for greater adoption." -from source: http://www.nasa.gov/open/plan/nebula.html

ghbrett's insight:

NASA has often been a leader in education and training using new media and emerging technologies. Here is one more instance of that. It is especially important in that it is an open-source project for a cloud-computing platform for dealing with Big Data. Big Data is another emerging technology that this project will serve as a model for other agencies to adopt. The training materials developed for the project should prove worth while as content and as models for other training programs in organizations and agencies.
